Art programs offered for Pickens County children
Art classes for elementary and
middle school students have been
made available to local students
through a Grassroots Arts Program
Grant. GAP grants are funded by
the Georgia Legislature and admin
istered by the Georgia Council for
the Arts. Drawing for artistically
talented students, grades 4-8, began
two weeks ago. Students from
Jasper and Tate Elementary, Hill
City, Jasper Middle and Pickens
Middle schools are participating.
Students were selected by their art
teachers for their artistic abilities.
The focus of the five-week drawing
class is on methods for improving
the skill levels of participants
including experiences with
advanced media and techniques for
creating realistic drawings.
Class for parents & children
offered in May
Doing Art Together is a three-
week class for children and parents
or grandparents from kindergarten
to grade 3 to be offered in May. The
class activities are modeled on a
workshop taught by the Metropoli
tan Museum of Art in New York
City. The projects will include a
variety of materials and will focus
on helping parents encourage their
students’ thinking abilities in posi
tive ways. Creativity, especially
problem-solving, will be the focus
of the activities. Parents will learn
activities they can also do with the
children at home. Having fun
together is equally important. This
class will be held at Jasper Elemen
tary on May 1, 8 and 15 from 10-
11:30 a.m. To register for the class,
contact Dr. Gregory at 770-893-
2060. There is a $15 fee with schol
arships available to anyone who
asks.
Both classes will be taught by
Dr. Diana Gregory, adjunct assistant
professor of art at Kennesaw State
University. Dr. Gregory is an expert
in art education and art therapy.

Ben Whitaker announces
for 51st Senate Seat
After much thought and prayer, I
announce as a candidate for the 51 st
Senate Seat. I feel I am qualified
with my past record of public serv
ice. With my experience as State
Representative, I feel I can do the
best job for this district.
Please consider me to be the
working-family and taxpayers’ can
didate. I am very conservative and
will get for this district what is due
them.
I have 16 years experience as
sole county commissioner. I have
six years experience as State Repre
sentative. I will fight to protect your
right to display the Ten Command
ments. I will need no on-the-job
training with my experience.
Please vote for me July 20 for
State Senate.

What does make a mother’s day? A pampering gift
for face, hands and body. And to hold her favorite rings and
things, an elegant jewelry roll-up case she’ll love forever.

TIME
FOR A
CHANGE!
Vote Brian MillsapYour Sheriff
On July 20
I am committed to:
✓ PROFESSIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT: My highest priority is to provide professional law enforcement
and efficient operation of the department.
✓ ETHICAL CONDUCT: The highest ethical standards will be followed in my administration. I consider
the office of Sheriff to be a sacred trust from the people of the county. The Sheriff’s Department is a ser
vant of the people. The operations of the department will be open and honest.
✓ AGGRESSIVE APPROACH TO REDUCE CRIME: I will have a proactive, not a reactive, Sheriff’s
Department. I will establish a Traffic Enforcement Unit and a Narcotics Unit. I will have a department that
will aggressively enforce all domestic violence and child abuse laws.
✓ TRAINING: Peace Officer’s Standards and Training Council requires only 20 hours of training a year. In
order to have an efficient department, we must exceed this minimum standard. Deputies need proper
equipment and access to outside training, specifically, in investigation and report writing.
✓ OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR ANSWERING CALLS: All 911 calls should be answered in person by
a deputy. Calls should never be investigated via a phone call. Once a deputy is on scene, there should be
more than just a report taken. An investigation should be made and if there is probable cause to make an
arrest, the arrest should be made. The deputies need to be given the liberty to investigate and use their
arrest powers as needed without being reprimanded for it. Also, the Sheriff’s Department should handle
their own vehicle accident calls. Deputies can handle minor traffic accidents instead of making citizens
needlessly wait for another agency.
✓ SECURITY FOR THE PICKENS CO. JAIL: The security of the jail is of utmost importance for the safety
and well being of the citizens of Pickens Co. I will assign competent supervisors to enforce strict no
escape policies.
✓ DRUG TESTING: I will enforce mandatory drug testing of all employees, including the Sheriff. This test
ing will be done randomly and without advanced warning.
✓ RESERVE PROGRAM: I will develop and maintain a reserve unit to provide a variety of public service
functions to enhance and supplement the capabilities of the agency’s full-time members. The reserves will
be volunteers who are state mandated that can assist in emergencies and special events.
