Pickens GOP announces dates of candidate forums

With Election Day less than 200 days away
and the July 20 Primary drawing close, the Pick
ens County Republican GOP Inc. announced sev
eral opportunities for residents to meet local,
state and U.S.Senate candidates prior to Primary
Day.
On Thursday, April 29th, from 7 p.m. to 9
p.m. at Lee Newton Park, a party will be held to
show support for President George W. Bush.
This will be one of 3,000 nationwide parties held
for President Bush on this day. In addition, all
Pickens County Republican candidates will be in
attendance.
There will be no speeches nor an admission
fee; just a festive atmosphere with food and an
opportunity to meet local candidates on a one to
one basis.
On May 6th, a County Candidate Forum
will be held at the Chamber of Commerce Build
ing in Lee Newton Park at 7 p.m.
Local Republican candidates running for
County Commissioner, District Attorney, Clerk
of the Court, Coroner, Sheriff, Magistrate Judge
and the Board of Education will be invited.
There will be similar forums on June 3rd, at 7
p.m. at the Jerusalem Community Center; and
with a date still to be determine a forum at the
Big Canoe Chapel. At each of these events, the
candidates will make brief presentations fol
lowed by a question and answer period.
A1 Bartell, who is seeking the U.S. Senate
Republican nomination and Chip Pearson who is
vying for the Republican nomination for the
State Senate will address the local GOP on
Thursday May 20. The meeting will be held at
the Media Center of Jasper Elementary School at
7 p.m.
Both candidates will answer questions after
their presentations.
Herman Cain, who is also seeking the Repub
lican nomination for the U.S. Senate, will make a
presentation at the June 17 GOP meeting.
Kevin Osborne, local GOP Chairman, extends
an invitation to all residents of Pickens County to
attend and participate in these events.

May 15, 2004 has been pro
claimed Health Pair Day in Pickens
County by Pickens County Com
missioner Bill Newton who urges
all citizens to consider the special
health screening tests and educa
tional exhibits that will be avail
able . The 2004 event will be held at
Appalachian Technical College on
May 15 from 7 until 11 a.m. Due to
construction at the college, entrance
to the activities will be through the
main entrance at 100 College Dr.
(see photo).
The Jasper Lions Club is again
coordinating entity as well as a con
tributing sponsor of the Pair and
Lion Larry Starr is serving as chair
man of this year’s committee. All
members of the Lions Club will be
on hand to help ensure another suc
cessful event.

event are: Mountainside Medical
Center, Appalachian Technical Col
lege, Pickens County Health
Department, Georgia Mountains
Hospice and Amedisys.

In addition to participation by
the sponsors and financial contribu
tors, the Pair’s continued success
each year is made possible by the
full cooperation of many of our
local physicians, the many health
service providers of the county,
local businesses, other concerned
health agencies and dozens of vol
unteers from throughout the county.
There will be many free educa
tional exhibits and exhibitors will
have prizes. A wide series of free
health screening tests will be
available and physicians will be on
hand to interpret testing results.
Discount certificates that can be
used anytime in 2004 will be avail
able for mammography and pap
smear tests. There will be a special
screening area for children with
much information, clowns, face
painting, freebies, etc. Volunteers
from Georgia Mountains Hospice
will again have breakfast items
available.
A major feature each year is the
special blood chemistry screening
series and it will again be available
for $25 (a $100+ value) and an
optional PSA Prostatic test will be
available for $10 (a $65 value).
Those taking these tests should not
eat or drink anything but water for
12 hours prior to taking the tests
This will be an important day for
our citizens.
The blood screening stations are expected to stay busy.

The bimonthly meeting of Jasper
Lions Club was held last Thursday
evening with President Dave Ward
presiding.
Guest speaker was Camille
Robinson, director of Certified Lit
erate Community (CLC) activities
in Pickens. She reviewed some of
the history of the CLCP that began
on May 1, 1997 with a goal to pro
vide educational services to at least
2,400 adults by the year 2007.
That goal was met last year and
the current goal is to continue
recruiting and retaining additional
students for the adult learning pro
gram at Appalachian Tech, funding
GED exam fees for students who
qualify and providing funds for
GED test materials and computer
software and equipment.
The Adult Learning Center at
Appalachian Technical College pro
vides individualized, self-paced
instruction free of charge. Areas
covered include tech school prepa
ration, GED preparation, basic read
ing, basic math, writing and English
as a Second Language. Adult Litera
cy programs in Pickens, Cherokee,
Lannin and Gilmer counties (SDA-
3) are under the auspices of the
Adult Literacy Department of
Appalachian Tech.
Business items discussed during
the meeting included preparations
underway for White Cane Day on
April 22, work of the annual 4th of
July celebration committee chaired
by Lion Jan Simpson, the annual
rabies clinic to be held May 8, the
annual Health Lair be be held May
15, the upcoming Vidalia Onion
sale, the Lions University to be held
in Jasper May 22 and the Lions
State Convention to be held in
Savannah June 18-20.
