Commercial
• Big Canoe Water Treatment
plant, waterline project. The plans
call for diverting Blackwell
Creek, to remove sediment, then
pumping to a planned water treat
ment plant outside the Big Canoe
gates on Whitley Road to be treat
ed and used to supply Big Canoe
residents.
Plans for a portion of the proj
ect including the dam and treat
ment plant were initially denied.
Land Development personnel said
they are expecting to see a
revised version.
• Grandview Fire Department.
The county has submitted plans
for earthmoving at a new site for
the Grandview Volunteer Fire
Department. The new site is on
Cove Road, opposite the intersec
tion with Bent Tree Drive. Work
is underway.

DSC hosts Pinning Ceremony for Business graduates
Honored during a recent Pinning Ceremony for graduating seniors were Jason Porter and
Brenda Cochran of Gilmer County; Meredith Barlow of Hamilton County; Connie Turcotte of Pick
ens County; and Roy Morgan or Dade County.
These five students were among the 45 graduating seniors who will earn bachelor’s degrees on
May 7 in one of five business degree programs offered through Dalton State.Mike Sarvis, Executive
Vice President of Cohutta Bank, addressed the students during the luncheon ceremony and College
President Dr. Jim Burran presented each student with a DSC logo lapel pin.

Women, Infants and Children
(WIC) will hold its annual com
ment period May 10-14. During
this time, Georgians are invited to
comment on the program and sug
gest ways to improve it. Send

WIC currently provides vouch
ers for supplemental foods such as
cereal, eggs, juice, milk, peanut
butter and infant formula to
approximately 255,000 low-
income women, infants and chil
dren. Women also receive nutrition
counseling, breast-feeding support
and referrals to other health and
social services.
Eligibility for WIC is based on
nutritional need and gross income.
Both working and unemployed
women who are pregnant or have
recently given birth and meet
income guidelines are eligible.
