Special Referendum Election
Ordered by Mayor and Council of
Town of Jasper, Georgia
To be held at Pickens High
School Auditorium on May 3, 1947
to submit to the legally qualified
voters of said Town the question of
Adoption or Rejection of the new
charter for said town as passed by
the General Assembly of Georgia
and approved March 25, 1947 -
E.A. Roper, Mayor, Paul Robinette,
Olen Cagle, James Jones, J.W.
Dyer, I.S. Mosley, Council.
(From Ed. Column) The adop
tion of the new charter to be voted
on May 3rd should be of interest to
every voter in Jasper. The town has
outgrown its present charter and it is
necessary, if we continue to
advance, to broaden the powers of
the mayor and council.
Among the articles provided in
the new charter will give the town
the right to give certificates of
indebtedness against anticipated
revenue producing plants to finance
construction and operation of them;
to extend, by election, the city lim
its; to fix the maximum tax levy at
25 mills; and street tax on males
between 18 and 50 years of age not
to exceed $5 or work not to exceed
15 days; the right to condemn prop
erty inside or outside city limits for
town purposes; may impose tax up
to $3. on dogs; to create a board of
health with power to regulate sani
tary or health conditions, hog pens,
out-door surface toilets or anything
that might prove a menace to the
health of the community. This does
not mean the present council will go
the full limits of the power but it
does fix their or their successors
limits.
Superior Court to Convene
on June 2nd
The court house of Pickens
County having been destroyed by
fire and the only place available for
holding court being the Pickens
County High School Building,
which will be needed for school
purposes through May 29th, 1947: it
is ordered that the regular April
term, 1947 of Pickens Superior
Court be continued to June 2nd,
1947.

Court, B.R.C.
