THURSDAY. APRIL 29. 2004 PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS PAGE 7B
2004 “Art for Heart” was indeed a gala occasion
Last Saturday evening we had an
opportunity to attend a most elegant
affair that not only provided a won
derful evening, but also was to pro
vide funds for a most worthy cause,
the fight against heart disease and
stroke.
The 2005 Art for Heart Gala
sponsored by the Pickens County
Division of the American Heart
Association took place in a beauti
fully decorated Chamber of Com
merce building. Deborah Goodrum
and Melinda Edwards were co
chairs of the event and with the
assistance of many other committee
members created a celebration that
lasted from 7 until after 11 p.m. Jill
Burnham, Field director and Volun
teer coordinator, along with volun
teers and staff from the Marietta
office of the American Heart Asso
ciation were also on hand to help.
You knew it was going to be a
very special evening when a world
class, absolutely marvelous hors
d’oeuvres buffet provided by the
Presenting Sponsors Joe and Bren
da Rueffert of the Woodbridge Inn
was opened. They and members of
their staff left nothing to chance in
making this part of the evening out
standing.
Music that took one back to the
days when music was music was
provided all evening by Swing
Shift, an orchestra composed of
Steven Watson on trumpet, Gene
Howell on piano, Jerry Fields on
drums and Ramon Pooser on bass.
Beautiful and perfect for dancing or
just listening.
In the lobby, more than 100
items that had been donated were
on display and ready for the Silent
Auction that ran from 7-9.
The formal program began about
9 with Doug Brooks serving as
emcee. The Rev. Max Caylor led
the invocation and the “Art for
Heart Gala’’ Committee was intro
duced — Deborah Goodrum, Melin
da Edwards, Martha F. Pool, Sandy
Tatum, Gail Woodall, Jane Kirk,
Fredia Watkins, Malenthia Odum,
Beth Pauley, Anna Edwards and
Joanna and Max Kearns.
Recognition was then given to
the sponsors that were vital to the
success of the event. Presenting

Brinson for his many years of i
cated service to local heart associa
tion work. He was president of the
local board of directors for five
years and was truly dedicated to
raising funds for the work, over
$150,000 can be attributed to him in
the past nine years alone. In addi
tion, he has served as chairman of
the Tourism Committee of the
Chamber of Commerce and is active
in the work of the Jasper United
Methodist. Earl and his wife Dot
and his children, Bonnie Boling,
Jenny Caudill and Les Brinson, also
attended the gala.
The Silent Auction results were
being tabulated and it was time for
one of the high points of the
evening. The Live Auction with
everyone’s favorite auctioneer Tom
Lindsey presiding. With Tom, one
must be aware that a hand move
ment, a loud cough or sneeze at an
inappropriate time or a sudden
motion could be interpreted as a bid.
Still, his auctions always result in
thousands of dollars for the cause.
Items for this auction were donated
by Robert J. Joms, Alan R. Young,
Big Ridge Farms, A Friend of the
Heart, Weeks Jewelry and Gifts,
Tom Lewis and Jo Tyson, Susan and
Jay Wright, Bill Hall, Jasper Drugs
and Gifts and Moore Furniture Co.,
Inc.

The success of this year’s Gala
was due to the untiring work of the
committee, the extraordinary gen
erosity of those donating items for
the auctions and those who attended
the event and exhibit continued
interest in the work of the American
Heart Association.
Funds raised through ticket sales
and proceeds from the auctions will
benefit the American Heart Associa
tion in its fight against heart disease
and stroke. Cardiovascular disease
is the number one killer in America
-- every 35 seconds someone dies
from heart disease and stroke. More
than 24,000 deaths are from the
causes occur in Georgia each year.
This year the American Heart Asso
ciation will invest $32.7 million in
the Southeast in direct grants to
heart research and support projects
in seven institutions in Georgia.
