Noted dance company coming to Jasper
May 7 dance performance offered free
One of the most unique and
exciting dance companies in Geor
gia is offering a free performance in
Jasper on May 7. Full Radius Dance
Company’s performance is made
available through grants awarded by
Character Through the Arts, the
Grassroots Art Program and Alter
nate Roots. Jasper Elementary is
sponsoring this event. The perform
ance is at 7 p.m. Friday evening at
Jasper Elementary Gym.
Full Radius will be doing a resi
dency at JES from May 3-6. The
residency is titled “Demystifying
Disabilities” and will focus on char
acter education. Students in grades
K-2 will learn about the life of
Beethoven and how he overcame
deafness and continued to write
music. Students will learn about,
create and perform dance move
ments to Beethoven’s 5th Sympho
ny. Pupils in grades 3-5 will attend a
workshop centered on family expe
riences. They will recall and record
a pleasant family experience and
create a dance movement from that
experience. All of the activities
taught are based on Georgia Quality
Core Curriculum (QCC) objectives.
On Thursday the students will
see the company perform works
based on the same themes used in
workshops. They will get to com
pare what they created to the profes
sional dancers’ interpretation of the
same ideas.
Full Radius is an Atlanta-based
modern dance company that is com
prised of dancers with and without
disabilities. Of note: Full Radius
Dance is the first and only profes
sional, physically integrated compa
ny in Georgia. In fact, it is one of
only a handful of such companies in
the US.
The company’s focus is on skill
and artistry. That some of the
dancers use wheelchairs, is second
ary. The wheelchair may lend addi
tional movement possibilities to the
choreography, but is not the focal
point of the work. The goal is to
neither promote nor diminish the
significance of the wheelchair itself,
but to focus the attention of the
audience on the dance. JES art
teacher Kathleen Thompson has
seen the group perform and
describes their dancing as “amazing
and wonderful to watch. Not only
for the speed of the movements but
the beauty of many of their compo
sitions.”
Funding came from three
sources. Character Through the Arts
is a federally funded character edu
cation initiative. Jasper Elementary
is a pilot school in the project. For
more information go to www.char-
acterthroughhearts .org
The Grassroots Arts Program is
funded by the Georgia Fegislature
and administered by the Georgia
Council for the Arts. Alternate
Roots is a Georgia funding agency
that promotes dance and other arts
performances.

This Friday, April 30 thru Sun
day, May 2nd is this year's sched
uled event.
Pickens Animal Rescue has a
wonderful relationship with the
PetsMart in Woodstock and will be
participating all three days at this
event. In previous years, PAR aver
aged 35 adoptions for the weekend
and are hoping for an even better
year in 2004. This is the best oppor
tunity to view hundreds of pets at
one location by a number of differ
ent rescue groups in North Georgia.
Pickens Animal Rescue (PAR)
will be located outside the PetsMart
off Exit 7 on Hwy 575, west on
Hwy 92, next to the Super Target. A
large mix of fostered pets will be on
hand all three days including cats
and dogs and puppies. All of the
fostered pets can be viewed on the
website: www.pickensanimalres-
cue.org.
PAR has been averaging 55
adoptions per month this year and
are thrilled with the quality of
homes that the fostered pets receive.
The volunteers work continuously
on preparing each dog or cat for
their permanent homes by having
the pets spayed or neutered
prior to adoptions and receiving all
their age-appropriate vaccines and
healthcare. All adoption fees are
$75, regardless of the pet's age.
Although this spring's Annual
Adoption Weekend is this weekend,
Pickens Animal Rescue holds regu
larly scheduled pet adoptions every
first and third Saturday of each
month at this same PetsMart loca
tion. PAR invites you to view their
available pets on-line and contact
them at 706-692-2772 for more
information on their adoption
process.
SHERIFF CANDIDATE’S WEBSITE DRAWING HEAVY USE -
A newly designed campaign website is up and running for the
Republican Sheriff candidate, Brian Millsap.
With more than 17,000 “hits” since its inception on March 3rd
and a daily average of 387 “hits”, the site has proven to be more
successful than anticipated. A “hit” is defined as a request to your
web server from a visitor’s browser.
Millsap says “As far as we can tell, it’s the first campaign web
site for a candidate in Pickens. I am very excited about this website
because I think it can be a very important tool in helping the citi
zens of Pickens County to make an informed decision when they
go to the polls in the upcoming elections. I am an open book. I
want the voters to know who they are voting for and if they have a
question or concern, they can call me or contact me through my
website. I am making every effort to talk to the voters of Pickens
County. We, also, would like to thank the staff of Bob Bell and
Associates for their time and effort in designing our campaign
website. They did a great job. ”

Georgia’s unemployment
declines in March
amid some job creation
The Georgia Department of
Fabor reported that the unemploy
ment rate in Georgia for March was
3.6 percent, a decline of two-tenths
percent from 3.8 percent in Febru
ary. During the same one-month
period, the number of jobs in Geor
gia increased by 14,300, or four-
tenths percent.
“We’re glad to see the unem
ployment rate below the 4 percent
mark,” said State Fabor Commis
sioner Michael Thurmond, “and for
the first time in quite awhile, we
saw some new jobs created. We’re
hopeful that these newly created
jobs are a precursor of things to
come. However, the pace of job cre
ation remains slow, at less than one-
half of 1 percent over the last 12
months. A slow job market is vul
nerable to negative economic forces
that might arise and stall the recov
ery.
“An additional concern is that
we have many long-term unem
ployed workers who have exhausted
their unemployment insurance ben
efits without finding replacement
jobs,” Thurmond continued, “while
others have become discouraged
and dropped out of the job market
altogether. Real improvement for
these workers can only come with
significant job creation.”
