Shooting the Breeze
with Rich Wells
Rich Wells is a local
singer/songwriter and a long time
resident of Marble Hill. He cur
rently performs every Tuesday and
Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at
Trevi’s Pizzeria in the Foothills
Shopping Plaza.
Where are you from originally?
How did you arrive in Pickens
County?
I was bom in Lake City, Florida.
My family moved up here a few
months after that. We lived up in
Blue Ridge, then we moved up on
Burnt Mountain. We lived there
until I was about three or four years
old. Then we moved to Marble Hill
when I was five, and we've been
here ever since.
What has been your overall opin
ion of Pickens County?
It's a great place to live, except
it's growing so much. The new
Eckerd I'm not too happy with. The
Home Depot and Kroger coming
in, I've got a couple issues with
that. But I know everybody. We've
got the [ten year] high school
reunion coming up. If I go to that
I'm probably going to see all the
people I see all the time anyway.
It's not a bad place to live. I might
be setting my sights a little farther
north in a few years. But you really
can't escape the cancer, no matter
where you go.
What do you do for a living?
Last summer an opportunity
came along. I was doing volunteer
kitchen work for a primitive earth
camp. It's a week-long camp. They
teach you different primitive skills.
I was doing volunteer work, and
they offered the job of running the
kitchen to me and my girlfriend.
We got this gig last year at Earth
Camp. It's a kids' camp. At the most
we have about 40 kids for any ses
sion. We did three sessions. So

we've got that again this summer,
and we've got the Earth Skills
camp. We're kind of really just
cooking and playing music. For me
that's the best thing — I finally
found something that can still pay
the bills, and I can still be creative
and work in that way. And at these
camps you meet some really amaz
ing people.
What is the purpose of the earth
camp? What kind of skills are
taught?
It's kind of getting people back
to how we got to this point where
we are. The camps get you back in
touch with the ancient life ways.
At Earth Skills there are some
basic classes that are ongoing, 12
hours a day, such as flint knapping
and fire making. It's geared to get
people, especially kids, in touch
with community and what it's like
to have a community, because it
just seems like we've gotten so far
from that in our day to day lives.
It's really hard for kids to get the
sense of what it's like to be people
living together. And the people I
work for are great. They keep open
lines of communication, so if any
body has problems it's encouraged
to be dealt with immediately,
instead of having bad attitudes fes
tering.
What kind of music do you play?
People ask me all the time what
I could define my music as. I guess
folk is pretty close. I'm just an
acoustic musician, just me and my
guitar. Lately I've been playing
down at Trevi's Pizzeria, Tuesday
and Thursday nights.
Maybe one of these days I can
get my stuff together and work with
some folks. It's just so much easier
to do it by yourself. One day I hope
to really be able to focus more on
writing, which is my high point. I
don't consider myself the greatest
guitar player. It's been nice having
my brother in town because he's an
excellent musician, and we've been
picking around a little bit. I'm hop
ing to finally get a CD together. It's
been floating around for a few
years. I have a tendency to be a lazy
musician sometimes, [laughs]
Who in the music world has
influenced you the most?
Bob Dylan was a big one. As far
as politically, it started before
Dylan — Bad Religion was all I lis
tened to. Heavily charged political
punk rock music. Then I discovered
Bob Dylan, and that was it. I really
started writing so much more.
A good friend I met at some
music festivals, his name is Ralph
Roddenberry, was a huge influence
on me. Just to see him play as a per
former, it was really amazing. He
was actually one of the biggest
influences. Hearing his songs, and
playing songs really taught me a
lot.
After that I discovered Tom
Waits. It's not your structured
verse-chorus-verse, it may rhyme it
may not. It's half spoken word
poetry, half beatnik poetry, blues,
jazz. He covers the whole spec
trum.
I've listened to a lot of Damien
Rice, he does a lot of acoustic stuff.
He's kind of new out there.
Jack Johnson is just great. I
couldn't not mention Ben Harper,
he was a huge influence on me a
few years ago.
A friend introduced me to a hip-
hop group, Dead Prez. I've never
listened to much hip-hop before.
That kind of brought me into this
new spectrum of music that's
always been there, but I've never
listened to it as much. As far as
poetry, there’s really nothing like
hip-hop.
I'm always glad to find some
thing new, especially if it gets me
worked up. Anger is a negative
emotion, I know, but we need a cer
tain amount of it because there's a
lot of things to be outraged about.
What kind of subjects do you
write and sing about?
I try not to be too heavy handed,
but a lot of my songs are politically
charged. It took me a while because
you could consider some of it pret
ty controversial, especially to audi
ences in Jasper. I was nervous for a
while about playing certain songs.
I'd feel like I was shooting myself
in the foot because you write these
songs, and you have to share them.
But at the same time you wonder if
you should. I just started biting the
bullet, and just singing what I
wrote.
In the past couple of years,
songs started coming out, and how
could I not share them? I'd be doing
a big disservice to myself and, I
feel, to the people I'm playing the
music for. Sometimes when I'm
playing a song, something inside
me gets nervous because of what
I'm about to say. But I feel like I
have to say it anyway, just to spite
that fear. It's going to be the fear
that's going to get us in the end if
we're not careful. The best I can do
is just fight that fear. And I'm not a
politician, so the best way I can do
it is just to sing about it. And these
are things that are important to me.
What is it about current times
that provides good material?
Catching people in lies and
pointing out the liars and the
thieves among us, that's kind of
easy. And the people who can't see
the lie, I think it's because they
don't want to see it. Why would you
want to think that everything that
you've been fighting for is a big lie?
I just see us heading down that
road. You read the things our politi
cians were saying about Vietnam
and Communism, and they're say
ing the same thing now, just replac
ing those words with “terrorism.”
It’s the same empty causes that
we're fighting for. I have family in
the military, and they feel like
they're doing right. When you're
being lied to it's hard to know
exactly what you're fighting for.
You've got people who have never
been to a war, who have been able
to avoid it their whole lives, and
they're telling people they have to
die for this and that. I feel like I see
through it.
What other hobbies and interests
do you have?
Lately, Playstation 2. [laughs]
It's got it's nails into me. I have to
slap my hand away from the con
troller, it's addictive. It's my broth
er's fault.
I've been writing a lot. I'm work
ing on some film scripts. I have a
comic book idea I've been working
on for years it seems like. I've got a
small story that's told in poetry,
that's been haunting me for the past
few years.
I love films, I watch all kinds of
DVDs. It was bad last summer,
every time I'd go out I'd end up
coming home with about four
DVDs, [laughs]
