Pickens Pregnancy Center
introduces new director
Carol Hutchinson (left) gives Baby Bottle Bank to Anne Hall
(one of the Center volunteers) to take to her church.
The Board of Directors of Pick
ens Pregnancy Center is pleased to
announce that Carol Hutchinson has
agreed to be the director as Phyllis
Smith steps down from leadership.
Phyllis has led the Center for nine
years and will continue to remain
involved as assistant to Carol and
the volunteers.
Carol comes to the Center with
many talents -- she is a graphic
artist, an effective communicator
and has a passion for young women
and ministry to them. Carol is
already on staff at the Joy House
teaching art to the teens there. She
and her husband Tom live in Bent
Tree and are actively involved in
the life of New Lebanon Presbyter
ian Church.
Carol has wasted no time getting
to work as the Center will be put
ting their baby bottle “banks” in
businesses, restaurants, churches
and homes in our community to
help finance the work of the Center.
The Center provides free pregnancy
tests for the clients, counseling, pre
natal and childbirth education and
referrals, and clothing and personal
needs assistance for the mother and
infant. The Center is the only
agency in the county that provides
new car seats for those mothers
unable to afford one. All services of
the Center are free and are funded
by donations from individuals,
churches and organizations.
The baby bottle banks will be
out starting Monday, May 3 for the
entire month. When you see these
bottles, just remember: If anyone
contributes a little, it will amount to
a lot. Thank you so much for drop
ping your change in and helping
support our ministry.
Lions sponsoring Rabies Clinic
Lions speed the paperwork and Dr. McGhee is very efficient.
On Saturday, May 8 the Jasper
Lions Club will again sponsor a
Rabies Clinic to be held at the
Jasper Middle School (old high
school), 339 W Church St., from 1-
3:30 p.m.
We are grateful to Dr. Michael B.
McGhee and staff of Wayside Ani
mal Clinic for making this service
available at a minimal price and at a
convenient location.
There will be an $8 charge for
each vaccine given. Rabies is a viral
disease that can infect all warm
blooded animals. Some species,
including raccoons, skunks, bats
and foxes, are more susceptible than
others. Pets (including cats) get
rabies when they come into contact
with infected wildlife. And infected
pets are the major source of expo
sure for people. Vaccination of pets
is every important.

Pickens County man dies in house fire
A 73 year old Jasper man died
last Wednesday as a result of a
house fire on Cove Road.
Sheriff Billy Wofford said the
man was apparently home alone
when the fire started sometime in
the early morning. The first call
came into the Pickens County 911
Center at 6:18 a.m.
“When fire-rescue personnel got
on the scene they were advised by
neighbors that the owner should be
home at this time of morning,” said
Sheriff Wofford.
Fire-rescue units from Grand
view and Bent Tree responded to the
scene.
“When the neighbors told us that
someone might be in the house we
tried to get the fire under control for
a rescue effort,” said Grandview
Fire Chief Sam Knighton. “The fire
had already made it too far”.
Complicating the rescue efforts
were several small oxygen bottles
that exploded. Witnesses said that
those explosions could be felt in
nearby houses.
Fire-rescue Personnel located the
body and called for investigators
just after 7 a.m.
Sheriff’s Office Detectives on the
scene then called for the State Fire
Marshals Office.
“We have to rule out all types of
