A very good day for Good Samaritan
By Doug Brooks
Couldn’t have asked for more
perfect weather last Thursday for
the 2nd Annual Good Samaritan
Health and Wellness Center Golf
Tournament held at Bent Tree Golf
Club. There were 21 teams in the
competition with 84 players. Dr.
John Spitznagel, chairman of the
Board of Good Samaritan, wel
comed the participants and
expressed gratitude for the support
being given the Center. All proceeds
from the tournament will go to
Good Samaritan.
Every one participating was real
ly a winner, but to keep it interest
ing, there were some recognitions.
Top honors for the 18-hole play
went to the team of Dr. A1 Hallum,
R. Hubbard, J.C. Versteeg and J.
Boland with a net score of 55.63.
The Harper/Bailey team was in 2nd
place and the Zeiler/Tanner team
finished in 3rd.
Prizes were also given for other
activities. Tom Martin won the put
ting contest and Ed Dewey took top
honors in the chipping contest.
Closest to three holes were Tom
Fawcett, Lou Chastain and Roy
Thompson. The longest drive on #7
was from Gary Collins and Mike
Thomason took the prize for his
drive on #18.
Unfortunately, there was not a
winner of the $10,000 prize for a

One of the keys to any successful
activity in our county is the great
cooperation we always get from the
Pickens County Progress.
Proceeds will benefit the all-vol
unteer Good Samaritan Center that
provides free, compassionate and
individualized medical, dental and
vision care for the uninsured who
live or work in Pickens County and
who meet strict financial guidelines.
A recent needs assessment shows
that number to be about 5,000 peo
ple; however, when the children
who cannot afford Peach Care and
seniors who do not have prescrip
tion drugs are added, the number
climbs to almost 9,000.
For information on the Good
Samaritan Center, call 706-253-
4673.
Lydia Decker and Vicki Wilson welcome the first two registrants,
C. J. Versteeg and Jim Boland.
