FFA Forestry Team excels in Area I
Forestry Career Development Event
On Tuesday, April 20th, eleven
members of the Pickens County
FFA Chapter traveled to Taylor
Farms in Cartersville to participate
in the Area I Forestry Career Devel
opment Event.
Although the activity is set up as
a team event, each person on the
team actually competes in a sepa
rate event. Each of the events is
designed to test a student’s knowl
edge and skill in conducting an
activity, which mirror those con
ducted by foresters in their specific
job areas. These are also the same
skills that are taught as a part of the
Forestry and Forestry Science
courses offered through the Agricul
ture Education Program at Pickens
High School. In class, students learn
the background information related
to a particular area of forestry. In
addition, the students are taught to
use the specific types of equipment
foresters would use as a part of their
daily job requirements. Eventually,
those that have an interest in the
various areas chose the events in
which they will compete in the
Forestry Competition.
In the Standing Saw-timber
event, Jordan Dorsey placed first.
Chris Wright placed first in the Tree
Identification event. Also placing
first were Brandon Jenkins and
Daniel Petty in the Forest Manage
ment event.
Forestry Management is the only
two-person event in the Forestry
CDE. Placing third at Cartersville
were Robert Hames in Forest Disor
ders, Josh Stanley in Reforestation,
and Grady Russell in the Timber
2004 Pickens County FFA Forestry Team.
Stand Improvement event. Fourth
place finishes in the competition
included John Bishop in Ocular
Estimation, Eddie Andrews in the
Compass event, and Ethan Fields in
Estimating Standing Pulpwood.
Johnny Merrell missed placing in
the Eand measurement event by
only a small margin in a very close
event. The overall team score of
592 won the team second place
honors and right to advance to the
state competition.
The Forestry Team traveled to
the State Forestry Commission
Headquarters in Macon on May 5th
to take part in the State CDE. At
State, Ethan Fields took a first place
finish in Estimating Standing Pulp-
wood and Jordan Dorsey placed
second in the Saw timber event,
missing first place by 24 hundredths
of a point.
The Forestry CDE is one of the
most exciting and largest team con
tests conducted by the State FFA
Association. With only two seniors
on the team, remaining team mem
bers are already looking forward to
next year’s competition.
