“Step to the Beat — READ ”
Pickens Library kicks off Vacation Reading Program 2004
Kids of all ages are getting ready
to “step to the beat” with the Vaca
tion Reading Program 2004 at the
Pickens County Public Library. The
theme for this year’s Vacation
Reading program is “Step to the
Beat ... READ!” The Pickens
County Public Library has many
fun activities planned for children
and teens that link music, dancing
and reading.
Children can sign up and start
reading and earning prizes begin
ning on May 21. This year the
library will kickoff the festivities
with Magician Ken Scott with his
brand new program, Step to the
Beat and Read Magical Storytelling
Show, on June 1 at 1:30 p.m. This
will be followed by six weeks of
special programs and storytimes.
The goal of the Vacation Read
ing Program is to encourage chil
dren to read for pleasure at times
when they are not in school. The
Pickens County Public Library
offers special programs and incen
tives to encourage children of all
ages, from infants to teens, to read
what they enjoy and to read often.
Parents, grandparents and other
caregivers are also invited to partic
ipate and to help pre-literate chil
dren enjoy books and develop a
love of reading.
This year, public libraries in
Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama,
Mississippi and Virginia will all
sponsor vacation reading programs
with the same up-tempo theme.
This regional cooperation began
with a partnership between Georgia
and South Carolina for the Vacation
Reading program in 2002. Alabama
and Mississippi joined the partner
ship in 2003 and Virginia joined
this year.
The artwork reflecting the “Step
to the Beat...READ!” theme was
designed by children’s book illus
trator and author Peter Catalanotto.
Mr. Catalanotto has illustrated
many children’s books and is the
author of Dad & Me, Matthew ABC,
Daisy 123, Mr. Mumble, Dylan’s
Day Out and many others. The

County Agent speaks to AARP
The Pickens County chapter of
AARP met May 4 at the First Bap
tist Church and the special guest
speaker was Rick Jasperse who has
been the Pickens County agent
from the University of Georgia
Cooperative Extension Service
since 1982. There were 53 in atten
dance.
In a most interesting presenta
tion, Mr. Jasperse discussed the
background of the County Agent
program in Georgia and other activ
ities such as the Farmers Market,
the Master Gardeners program and
other items of interest to the home
gardener. He answered many ques
tions the attendees had concerning
home gardening and gave many
meaningful suggestions.
In the business session, Doug
Brooks made a special presentation
to members Kate Payne and the
Rev. Charles O. Walker. James G.
Parker, AARP National president,
and William D. Novelli, CEO, for
warded to them a citation award
and commemorative pin recogniz
ing their years of dedicated service
to the chapter and the community.
For 17 years, Rev. Walker and Mrs.
Payne had planned, organized and
conducted an average of 11 trips a
year for seniors in our community,
many of whom no longer drive, that

are interesting, inexpensive and that
involve a minimum of physical
involvement. The outings give
opportunity for the seniors to asso
ciate with their peers as they ride,
learn, laugh and share meals togeth

Jasper Banking Company holding first
Spring Customer Appreciation Day on May 15
Jasper's hometown bank, found
ed in 1945, holds an annual Christ
mas Eve Open House to thank
local customers and to celebrate the
holidays.
"This year's addition of a Spring
Customer Appreciation Day gives
local citizens a celebration to start
the summer," Mark Whitfield, Pres
ident, said. "We work hard each
day to show Jasper Banking Com
pany customers that our employees
appreciate their banking with us,
but this new added celebration is a
way to thank our customers for
being part of the family and allow
ing us to serve them."
The celebration is scheduled for 11
a.m. to 2 p.m. in the bank's Main
Street drive-thru area. Whitfield
said advance interest is indicating a
"good-sized gathering of people
will be on hand." Though the Main
Street drive-thru location will be
closed for the party, a second loca
tion at the rear of the bank will be
open for banking transactions from
8:30 a.m. to noon.
Those attending will be treated
to the music of the popular C. C.
Morgan Band plus hamburgers, hot
dogs, chips, slaw, beans, dessert
and soft drinks. Whitfield said,
"Start your summer right by
entering our drawing for a gas
grill." The drawing is open to
everyone attending this event with
the lucky ticket being drawn at 1
p.m. The holder of the winning
ticket must be present in order to
win. Linda Flynn, coordinator of
the event, said tickets would be
drawn until a winner comes for
ward. "Plus, we'll make every
child a winner with free balloons!"
