Heritage Days at Ball Ground: Fun For all Ages
Dennis W. Dougherty
Last year it rained cats and dogs
at the Ball Ground Heritage Days
Festival. This year, Eric Wilmarth,
the Ball Ground City Manager,
promises, “I will do everything in
my power to keep the rain away this
year.”
Heritage Days offers everything
one could possibly want in the way
of fun.
For the children there will be
rock climbing, face painting, paint
ball target shooting, jumping houses
and much more. The children will
also be able to participate in a fire
safety program that includes a par
ticipatory fire simulation, where the
children actually get to practice
what they have learned to escape a
fire in their own home.
For adults the event will feature
over 70 vendors as well as demon
strations by wood turners, candle
makers, blacksmiths, basket
weavers and potters.
History buffs will particularly
enjoy the tour of Ball Grounds his
toric homes - including the Alfred
W. Roberts House, which is a large,
two-story, wood framed, Victorian
eclectic style structure with classi
cal detailing, which dates from the
pre-Civil War mid-1850s.
The Ball Ground Heritage Days
festival starts with a parade at 10:00
AM Saturday May 15th, and the
event continues on into Sunday the
16th.
Wilmarth promises amble park
ing for all, but he pointed out “I
suggest people arrive early on Sat
urday, as the streets will close at
9:30 AM.”
Last year’s parade included floats from a variety of local organizations - here members from the
Ball Ground Baptist Church enjoy themselves before the rains came to town.

Callahan Insurance Agency:
Continuing a 40-year tradition
The Callahan Insurance Agency
on Main Street, has been in busi
ness for almost 40 years.
The late Jerry Callahan estab
lished the agency in 1965 when his
family moved to Jasper from Dal
ton. Callahan worked as an insur
ance agent for 23 years.
Jerry Callahan passed away in
1986 and the business name was
changed to Sue B. Callahan Insur
ance Agency. Sue Callahan quit her
job as a second grade teacher and
took over her husband’s business.
She worked as an agent for 17
years and has recently retired.
Therefore, the business name
has changed again. This time the
agency was taken over by Marty
Callahan, son of Jerry and Sue
Callahan.
According to Marty Callahan,
Sue Callahan plans on taking trips
to her Florida home and spoiling
her grandchildren.
