In the Garden . . .
with Martiele Dunn
Martiele and Lee Dunn’s collection of azaleas include some 100
plants which gives them a long bloom season each spring in a vari
ety of colors.
By Christie Pool
Two decades ago Martiele Dunn
and her husband Lee drove down to
Albany, Georgia in a station wagon
to visit her aunt. Little did they
know that by the time they came
home the two would have a good
start on a what would become a
rather large azalea garden.
"While we were visiting with
my aunt she took us to Fort Gaines
to a man who supplied Callaway
Gardens with azaleas," Dunn said.
"His name was Mr. Coleman. By
the time we left for home we had a
station wagon full of azaleas from
him."
The Dunns' backyard garden
now features around 100 azaleas
ranging in color from reds and
whites to purples and pinks. By
planting different varieties, the
Dunns' are assured of wonderful
spring color for more than a month
as each plants bloom out at various
times.
"Although we got a lot from
down in south Georgia we've also
gotten several native ones around
here just growing wild on (Burnt
Mountain)," Mrs. Dunn said.
Many of the deciduous native
varieties now found in their back
yard bloom light orange and last for
a couple of weeks each spring.
"We have deciduous and ever
green azaleas and I've planted
phlox and iris underneath some of
them to complement the plants," she
said. "We just love them and I don't
know who has dug more holes - me
or Lee."
In a flower bed on the side of her
home, Dunn has a shade garden
which features her favorite plant -
azaleas - with the flowering ground-
covers of white candy tuft and
phlox, both of which enjoy shade.
Variegated hostas also fill in under
the shrubs.
"This has been a good year for
azaleas. It seems that everyone’s are
just full of blooms."
Mrs. Dunn's husband often roots
the azaleas after they've finished
blooming and gives them to their
son Jack to plant at his home where
he has many native azaleas and rho
dodendrons.
"Lee has rooted several by
pulling down a branch, scratching
the bark off a little, laying them on
the ground and putting a rock on top
of the branch," she said. "It's better
to do it after they've finished bloom
ing and then it just takes a season or
two to have another plant."
In addition to the azaleas, the
Dunns’’ backyard garden features
many varieties of daylilies they got
from a farm in Tifton, Georgia. The
daylilies start blooming in May after
the azalea show is over. Dotted
throughout the garden is a handful
of blue hydrangeas (macrophylla).
Although Dunn says she doesn't
spend much time watering her
plants unless they are newly planted
in the spring, one gardening chore
she finds herself doing a lot of is
weeding.
"I am constantly pulling weeds -
it's a never ending task," she said. "I
don't water unless I've just put the
plant out because it seems that if
you ever start watering them you'll
have to keep it up."
In her garden, Dunn has also
placed several bird feeders and
annual flowers that attract winged
friends.
When the Dunns' added a couple
of rooms in the basement a few
years ago they used a portion of the
space as a greenhouse to over-win
ter tender plants.
"We built a closet and bathroom
downstairs and had the builder put
in a glassed area for some plants,"
she said. "He used glass from a car
windshield so it would be less
breakable and it's worked out well."
Dunn's basement greenhouse
holds numerous potted plants that
otherwise wouldn't survive the north
Georgia winters including amaryllis,
ferns and cactus.
"I just love flowers and this is a
great way to enjoy them and keep
them year after year."
