Reading Council (PCRC) is “to
encourage, promote, and improve
the attitudes, habits, and expecta
tions toward reading among all resi
dents of all ages.”
The council will soon become an
official member of both the Interna
tional Reading Association and the
Georgia Reading Association.
There will be numerous community
projects and programs in the near
future sponsored by the PCRC to
promote literacy awareness and
improvement. Membership is open
to any interested person or business.
All educators and parents are
encouraged to join.
The Rotary Club provided the
seed money to establish the new
council. Charter members of the
Pickens County Reading Council
include Lee Shiver, Cleve
Boutwell, Susan White, Amelia
McIntyre, Cecelia Wheeler, Sharon
Rasco, Susan Arrendale, Suzette
Hermann, Linda Hamrick and Jan
ice Sly.
The kick-off celebration for the
new community-oriented council
occurred on May 4, at a festive
party hosted by Charlie and Sandra
Wright. During a short business
meeting the following officers were
elected: Janice Sly, President; Lee
Shiver, President-Elect; Sharon
Rasco, Vice-President; Cecelia
Wheeler, Recording Secretary;
Susan Arrendale, Corresponding
Secretary; and Suzette Hermann,

Keep Pickens Beautiful teamed up with The Upper Etowah
River Alliance last month to do some landscaping at the new Com
munity Thrift Store. There are two sections of raised beds one on
each side of the concrete porch. The flower beds that where gener
ated are called “.Xeriscape,” they are designed to be environmen
tally friendly and use a minimum amount of water.
Butterfly Bushes, Beautyberry, Sweet Grass, and other perenni
als make up some of the plants that where used. Rain barrels were
placed at the bottom of the gutters to collect the water. The rain
barrels will act as a drip irrigation system to water the plants. As
water shortages becomes more of a problem to our communities.
This type of a watering system is a good way to conserve our pres
ent water supply.
If you would like more information on creating a xeriscape gar
den, please contact the KPB office at 706-253-3600 or The Upper
Etowah River Alliance at 770-704-7280. Pictured above for KPB is

Consumer Qs are prepared by
the Office of Public Affairs. Ga.
Dept, of Agriculture. If you have
questions, you may write the Office
of Public Affairs, Room 224, 19
Martin Luther King Drive, Atlanta,
Ga. 30334 or call 800-282-5852.
Garden Reminders:
The sooner you plant those
warm-season veggies, the better.
Squash, cucumbers, beans and other
spring crops need to have time to
mature before the real heat arrives.
Truly heat-tolerant crops like okra,
sweet potatoes and Malabar can
wait if space is limited.
Thin fruit on peach, plum, pear
and apple trees to prevent limb
breakage and insure a good crop of
large, juicy fruit. The earlier you
thin, the better the effect. Space
peaches at 6 inches, plums at 4 and
pears and apples to 1 per cluster.
Watch for aphids on young
transplants and tender new growth.
If no beneficial insects are present,
a blast of water or soap spray will
generally shut them down for a
while and give beneficial insects a
chance to catch up. Check the
plants in a week to see if another
treatment is needed.

Q: What services does the
Department of Agriculture provide
for consumers?
A: The Georgia Department of
Agriculture takes its responsibilities
very seriously and is committed to
providing superior agricultural
products, service and leadership.
Our mission is to provide excel
lence in services and regulatory
functions, to protect and promote
agriculture and consumer interests
and to ensure an abundance of safe
food and fiber for Georgia, America
and the world by using state-of-the-
art technology and a professional
workforce.
This agency operates primarily
as a regulatory and enforcement
agency, protecting the consuming
public and promoting the farming
sector. It is organized in divisions
that specialize in different responsi
bilities. To get a more specific view
of the responsibilities of each divi
sion, please contact our office of
Consumer Services for a brochure
or visit www.agr.state.ga.us
Q: How can I prevent my chick
en from eating their eggs?
A: Egg-eating occurs primarily
in flocks that are kept on the floor
instead of cages. It can result when
the hens are overcrowded, when
light intensity is too bright or when
nests are inadequate in some way.
The chickens may also be trying to
compensate for a deficiency in their
diet. Egg-eating is usually initiated
by accidental egg breakage, but
then the birds learn to break eggs
themselves. For a copy of the com
plete document on preventing egg
eating by chickens, please contact
our office.

Q: My five-year-old daughter
has expressed an interest in garden
ing. I would like to plant something
with her but have no idea what.
What would you recommend? I
require something simple, easy and
low-maintenance.
A: Choose things that are quick
to germinate and grow and/or have
sensory delights for children such
as radishes — the seed germinates
quickly and you can harvest them in
20-25 days. Kids love to pull them
out of the ground. There’s an Easter
Egg blend with round radishes in an
assortment of colors. Sweet peas
are extremely fragrant and pretty
(soak the seeds in water overnight
for easier germination). Sunflowers
and hollyhocks are magical. You
might want to start with transplants
while the seeds are doing their
thing. Try bedding plants such as
lamb’s ears, which are soft and
wooly. Pansies and Johnny-Jump-
Ups are easy to grow from starts
and their little faces are fun. Choco
late mint is easy to grow and smells
wonderful, though you should plant
any mint in a container in the
ground since mints are very inva
sive. Marigolds and cherry toma
toes are easy and prolific. If possi
ble, go to a full-service nursery
with your daughter and look at the
plants. Let her choose something
that she likes. Most bedding plants
are fairly easy to grow and the nurs
ery should be able to steer you in
the right direction.

ORTHODONTICS
WITH A PROMISE
FROM MY HEART TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS
I have been in practice for over 25 years and have promised that if
any one of my many thousands of patients are not happy with their
orthodontic results, I will retreat at no charge to them. This is a
simple promise that tells you that I take the time to obtain optimal
results for each unique patient. My patients wear their retainers
only for a short time and I do not rely on gluing patients’ teeth
together to maintain stability. Only neutral zone orthodontics can
provide this type of quality treatment. Invisalign, functional appli
ances, head gear, and regular braces are only instruments. You
must diligently seek the intentions and get a promise from an
orthodontist of your choice.
If you are ever told that you will need to wear a retainer indefinitely or for life, or are
told that there will be a retainer cemented on your teeth to remain indefinitely then you
are not getting neutral zone orthodontics. BEWARE - When an orthodontist tells you to
wear your retainer indefinitely and you accept this as fact you have taken the responsi
bility of treatment stability from the orthodontist, where it should be, and now accept it
as your responsibility. When your teeth shift and become crooked again, that orthodon
tist is going to say “Well you didn’t wear your retainer like I told you to wear it. It is your
fault the teeth shifted!” When you are told this you must realize that is only a COVER UP
FOR INCOMPLETE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT and in most cases it is not your
fault. Find out these intentions BEFORE you begin orthodontic treatment by asking very
specific questions.
You may receive excellent treatment from an orthodontist who promises you nothing.
However, would you prefer to trust your orthodontics needs to an orthodontist less confi
dent in their routine results or one willing to make a meaningful promise.
