May is National Hepatitis Aware
ness Month, and the Pickens County
Health Department is offering free
testing for Hepatitis C. Educational
materials on common forms of viral
Hepatitis - A, B and C - will also be
available. Hepatitis C tests will be
conducted at the health department
the week of May 17-21. Please call
ahead to 706-253-2821 to schedule
an appointment.
According to Thomas J. Chester,
MD, director of the North Georgia
Health District, “Viral hepatitis
affects several thousands Georgians
each year. It is critical that people
get tested if they are at risk for
infection because someone may not
have any symptoms, and an accurate
diagnosis can only be made using
laboratory testing.”
Hepatitis C is especially danger
ous. It can cause long-lasting liver
damage, even liver cancer.
People at risk for Hepatitis C
include:
• anyone who received a blood
transfusion or organ transplant
before July 1992;
• anyone treated for clotting
problems with a blood product made
before 1987;
• anyone who has ever been on
long-term kidney dialysis;
• anyone who has injected drugs
not ordered by a doctor, even once
many years ago;

Viral hepatitis is inflammation of
the liver caused by a virus. There
are several forms of viral hepatitis -
A, B, C, D and E. Each hepatitis
virus is unique, causing different
infections. Co-infection with more
than one form of viral hepatitis is
possible. Hepatitis A, B and C are
the most common forms of viral
hepatitis in the US and Georgia.
Many hepatitis infections are
asymptomatic, but common symp
toms include: anorexia, nausea,
vomiting, fever, abdominal pain
and raised liver enzymes (AST and
ALT). Jaundice is a characteristic
symptom of infection, but tends to
develop later than other symptoms.

Found a mistake on your Federal tax return?
File an Amended Return
You discovered an error after
your tax return has been filed. What
should you do? You may need to
amend your return.
The IRS usually corrects math
errors or requests missing forms
(such as W-2s) or schedules. In
these instances, do not amend your
return. However, do file an amend
ed return if the following were
reported incorrectly:
• your filing status; your total
income; or your deductions or cred
its.
Use Form 1040X, Amended US
Individual Income Tax Return, to
correct a previously filed Form
1040, 1040A, 1040EZ or electroni
cally-filed return. Be sure to enter
the year of the return you are
amending at the top of Form
1040X. If you are amending more
than one tax return, use a separate
1040X for each one and mail each
in a separate envelope to the IRS
processing center for the area in
which you live. The 1040X instruc
tions list the addresses for the cen
ters.
The Form 1040X has three
columns. Column A is used to show
original or adjusted figures from the
original return. Column C is used to
show the corrected figures. The dif
ference between the figures in
Columns A and C is shown in Col
umn B. There is an area on the back
of the form where you explain the
specific changes being made on the
return and the reason for each
change.
If the changes involve another
schedule or form, attach it to the
1040X. For example, if you are fil
ing a 1040X because you have a
qualifying child and now want to
claim the Earned Income Credit,
you must attach a Form 1040
Schedule EIC to show the qualify
ing person’s name, year of birth and
Social Security number.
If you are filing to claim an addi
tional refund, wait until you have
received your original refund before
filing Form 1040X. You may cash
that check while waiting for any
additional refund.
Generally, to claim a refund, you
must file Form 1040X within three
years from the date you filed your
original return or within two years
from the date you paid the tax,
whichever is later.
