Recent lab results have con
firmed rabies in a raccoon that was
picked up on Old Farm Road in
Woodstock. The raccoon came into
the yard of a resident on April 22
and attacked the family dog. The
raccoon was captured and county
officials sent the head in for testing
to the Department of Human
Resources Virology Lab in Decatur;
the results for rabies were deter
mined to be positive. The dog was
current on its rabies shots and was
immediately re vaccinated.
According to William Grizzle,
Environmental director for the
North Georgia Health District, this
is the second rabid raccoon found in
the Noon Day Creek area this year.
The first one was captured after
having been involved in an attack
on a dog in February. Officials
report that the number of rabid ani
mals in Georgia is on the incline
and that the threat of the disease
will continue to spread.
Dr. Thomas Chester, District
Health directors, states, “Residents
can help prevent the spread of
rabies by making sure their pets and
livestock are current on their vacci
nations. They also need to avoid
direct contact with unfamiliar ani
mals and to be particularly cautious
around animals that are exhibiting
aberrant behavior, even their own
pets.” For example, if a nocturnal
animal is not out and about during
the day, that is unusual and the ani
mal should be treated with caution.
Also, if your pet is normally very
active but becomes lethargic, or is
Dr. Perrow extends thanks
There is no way I can possibly
tell each of you personally how
much I appreciate your expressions
of friendship and presence at my
recent retirement celebration. More
than this, I appreciate you, for each
of you has contributed by your
strength to what I am, and so I am a
part of you.
It has been a joy to work among
you, and I am happy if that work has
been creditable in your eyes. Let me
place credit where most of it is due:
to the Rock of Ages beneath our
foundation; to the lovely lady who
has been beside me as my life part
ner, providing the firm highway
beneath my course; to the holy
Guidebook which has been our road
map; and to the Christ Who has
been with us every step of the way.
Thanks with all my heart.

normally sweet-natured but
becomes aggressive, this could be a
sign of rabies.
Dr. Chester also recommends
that residents have their pets spayed
and neutered to help reduce the
number of unwanted animals.
If bitten by a potentially rabid
animal, individuals are advised to
thoroughly wash the wound with
soap and water and seek immediate
medical attention. If a pet is bitten,
the owner should seek veterinary
assistance for the animal right away.
The healthcare provider and/or the
veterinarian will need to know the
following to assess the risk of rabies
exposure:
• geographic location of the inci
dent;
• type of animal that was
involved;
• how the exposure occurred
(provoked or unprovoked);
• vaccination status of animal;
• whether the animal can be safe
ly captured and tested for rabies.
