“Reeling in
the Dark ”
Bass marathon will
raise needed funds
The Appalachian Domestic Vio
lence Task Force invites you to its
1st Annual “Reeling in the Dark”
Bass Marathon on Saturday, July
17 at Carter’s Lake. Fishing under
the stars begins at 7 p.m. and ends
at 2 a.m. This event is sponsored by
ETC.
The entry fee is $100 per boat
with a two-person per boat maxi
mum. The winners are the ones
who catch the most pounds of fish
with a five-fish limit per boat at a
60 percent payback. Also, there
will be a Big Fish pot consisting of
100 percent payback. Participants
will be fed a continental breakfast
at weigh-in and several participants
will also receive door prizes at
weigh-in.
Money raised will be donated to
the Appalachian Domestic Violence
Task Force’s Visitation Center. The
Visitation Center provides a safe
place for families in Pickens,
Gilmer and Fannin counties to have
supervised and monitored visitation
in a child-friendly atmosphere
where survivors of domestic vio
lence and child abuse are protected
from their abusers.
In the past, non-custodial par
ents were visiting their children at
local restaurants. Occasionally,
some parents fought in the parking
lot in front of their children. In
addition, some children had to visit
the jail to see their non-custodial
parents, and this location was a
scary place for the youngsters.
Also, since DFCS has only one
small meeting room at their offices
for visitation, scheduling families
with busy caseworkers to supervise
visits was very difficult.
To meet this need, the
Appalachian Domestic Violence
Task Force opened a Visitation
Center in September 2003 to pro
vide a safe place for families to
meet. The Visitation Center cur
rently serves families in Pickens,
Gilmer and Fannin counties. The
director, Tammy Hill, screens and
trains volunteers who monitor and
supervise visits, and an off-duty
police officer is present at the Cen
ter during all visitations. Since the
Center’s inception, over 30 families
have utilized the facility.
Currently, the Center is in need
of donations to keep it operating.
All donations are tax deductible. To
register for the “Reeling in the
Dark” Bass Marathon or to volun
teer at the Visitation Center, please
contact Colette Jacquot at 770-893-
9027.
Visitation Center’s Mission
Statement: “To provide a safe,
secure and structured alternative for
the exchange and/or visitation of
children between custodial and
non-custodial parents in a neutral
environment that promotes healthy
interaction between members and
prevents the victimization of any
person.

Reserve the evening of May 20
for another special program of the
Friends of the Pickens Library fea
turing guest speaker Jack Riggs.
When the Finch Rises is his
debut novel that takes place in a
small North Carolina mill town in
the late 1960s. Riggs now teaches at
Georgia Perimeter College in
Atlanta but was raised in Lexing
ton, N.C. and received a Master of
Fine Arts degree in Creative Writ
ing from the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro. His book
was selected as a best new novel by
the American Library Association
and as a best of Southern Fiction for
2003 by the, Atlanta Journal-Consti
tution. He was also selected as an
“Emerging New Southern Voice” at
the millennial gathering of the Writ
ers of the New South at Vanderbilt
University in 2000.
Riggs’ novel is about the friend
ship of two youngsters, Raybert and
Palmer who, as one reviewer put it,
“through the scrim of adolescence
and poverty, provide a glimpse of
universal human foibles and singu
lar moments of transcendence.
Fiercely honest and beautifully nar
rated, When the Finch Flies flashes
like the sharp rim of the eclipsed
moon on the night when Raybert
and Palmer’s fate is finally
revealed.”
You’ll want to join us at the
library at 7 p.m. May 20 to meet
this gifted writer. The public is cor
dially invited. There is no admis
sion charge and light refreshments
will be served.
