Saturday
This Saturday morning began
with my grandchildren John and
Anna coming over to visit a while.
We began by going to the Farm
ers Market at the parking lot across
from Newton Park. We had to park
across the creek, but this was fine,
for Anna got to see the minnows in
the headwaters of Town Creek
which goes into Sharp Mountain
Creek.
The first stop was at John and
Henry’s shrubbery and tree display.
They were greeted and we proceed
ed to the other sellers. After stop
ping at the various sellers’ tables,
we headed uptown for breakfast at
the Carriage House. The bagels
with cream cheese are always good.
Our visit to Jasper Drug Store
was to get Mary’s Mother’s Day
gift. Anna picked out a small heart-
shaped, three-drawer jewelry music
box. I sent both to get a card for
their mother. Anna came back with
a pretty card - I later was informed
by John that it was a birthday card.
Anna said, “That id OK, it will
soon be her birthday!’’ John got a
card with a small gold locket. I
took them home.
After an afternoon at the com
puter, I dressed and took the low
road to Amicalola Falls. I went to
the Lodge for a container of water.
The clerk at the desk acted offend
ed at my question. I ignored him!
However a lady overheard my
request and came over and said,
“The bottled water is downstairs.
Wait here and I will go get you
one.”
“Here, let me give you some
money.”
“No! I will be back in a minute.”
Then I drove down to the park
ing area nearest to the top of the
falls.

The wedding of Amanda Ham-
montree and Tom Garrett was inter
esting and at a beautiful place. It
was in Amicalola Falls State Park at
the top of the falls. This was a nice
place and not too hot —however, in
the ceremony I felt the sweat
streaming down from what little
hair I have left on the top of my
head.
Actually, at the bottom of the
falls would have been a spectacular
background for the wedding. How
ever, the park may not permit this
site to be used for outside events.
From where we were, we could not
see the water as it rolled over the
rock cliff. Hear the falls, yes.
Grandmother Mary Stokes Car
ney attended and so did the groom’s
grandparents. There was a goodly
number of guests present.
Amanda, the bride, was beauti
ful. Tom, the groom, was tall and
handsome.
I enjoyed the variety of classical
music and the well-sung solos were
pleasing.
I used the old Episcopal wedding
ceremony with its five common-law
contracts and scripture written by
the Apostle Paul.
The trumpeter surprised us with a
different selection of tunes which
made us laugh.
The after-wedding seated dinner
was in the Lodge and the arrange
ments were beautiful. Ed and Jo
Jenkins told me Sunday at church
that the food was delightful.
I did not stay for dinner. I surely
would have liked to, but last week I
caught the illness going around in
the schools at Jasper. Until the
“runs” were over, I had to be very
careful of what I ate. The last two
days I have gone with very little
food.
Sunday morning, May 9, 2004
John and Anna came over early
this morning. As usual, breakfast
was at Arby’s. I enjoyed an Arby’s
Twist and 1/4 of a biscuit. Then I
drove our ride on the side streets
around town. We keep up with the
various plants in the yards which are
coming out in beauty. In one garden
we saw has potatoes which were a
foot and a half high, cabbage, let
tuce and other plants coming out.
His garden is on red soil with no
weeds.
At 9:30 at church the children go
to Sunday School. I say hello to
some of the adult classes and at 10
a.m. Joy Huddlestun and I go to the
Grandview Health Care Center. (I
have been doing this for about 41
years!)
At Grandview, Joy sang “I
Would Like to Hear My Mother
Sing Again.” I gave the list of those
sick in the hospital, led the prayer
and then preached. Because it was
Mother’s Day, I used the last chap
ter of Proverbs — the Good Wife.
This scripture applies to most of
these elderly ladies. Besides me,
only one man was present. A.W.
Lawson and Jeanette Medlin Law-
son were visitors. They came to see
Louise Howell. Louise, age 93, is
very alert and with whom it is a joy
to carry on a conversation.
After the service, Joy and I
always go to Mrs. Florence Chap
man’s room to say hello and have a
prayer. (By the way, J. Guy Chap
man, a former member, and Charles
Pittard, a present member, were
from Taliaferro County. M.C. and
Betty McDaniel taught school there
years ago. This will make sense
later.)
The service at church was long
this AM. (Like I used to have!)
After the prelude, Pastor Charlie
gave a report that Trish Jackson, the
widow of recently deceased Dr.
Randy Jackson, has setting up a
scholarship fund in his memory. The
Jasper First Baptist Church has been
designated to hold and to distribute
scholarship money to graduates
going to a medical school.
David Stuart, Minister of Music,
gave a report about the shelter built
Friday and Saturday at Craw
fordville, Taliaferro County, David,
Anthony Whitworth, Bradley Rut
ledge, Bill Eubanks and Glenn
Rasco of the church. First Baptist
Church furnished $3,118 for this
project. They also built two picnic
tables.
The poorest county in Georgia,
Taliaferro County has only about
2,000 people. The Cooperative Bap
tist Fellowship of Georgia is doing
this community aid project on eight
acres of donated land. It will have a
Community Center and play
grounds and ball fields plus our
shelter. For 20 years, all high school
students were driven to Greene
County High. The dropout rate was
very high. A few years ago, the
school at Crawfordville became
Kindergarten through 12th grade. Of
the 11 teachers, only the county
superintendent/principal/ teacher
lives in the county. She has a Doctor
in Education degree. Among all
those Baptists and a few Methodists,
she is Jewish! She is a brave lady
doing a difficult but great work!
David reported that Shorter Col
lege has provided a full scholarship
for a high school graduate from that
county. The scholarship has the stip
ulation that the person receiving it
has to come back to the county to
live. One of the teachers exclaimed,
“Why would anyone want to come
back here to live!”
Crawfordville was the home of
Alexander H. Stephens. He was the
vice president of the Confederate
States of America and later Gover
nor of Georgia and United States
Senator.
The State of Georgia maintains
his beautiful home, called Liberty
Hall.
Back to Church:
In the middle of the church serv
ice we had the Dedication of Chil
dren service for the daughters of
Amanda and Jim Jones, Jr. These
girls, Kelsi and Kami, are as cute as
can be! They are fifth generation
children from the family of Will
and Carrie Jones in our congrega
tion. For the congregation, the dedi
cation service is always a special
event. Everybody enjoys the ritual
and seeing these beautiful children.
(By the way, for those of you
who do not know, Dedication of
Children is one of the nine rites of
the original Separate Baptist Sandy
Creek Association in North Caroli
na. These rituals date from 1755
and all nine rites are still practiced
in Pickens County by our church or
the Country Baptists. They wash
feet and we don’t. We Dedicate
children and they don’t.)
Chris Rumble, our new minister
to youth and children had a very
good children’s sermon. Everyone
enjoyed the childrens’ responses to
him.
(I learned years ago that adults
listen more to the children’s sermon
than they do to the “long” sermon.
If I wanted to get across a point to
the adults, I made it in the chil
dren’s sermon.)
Pastor Charlie Boggan preached
an interesting and meaningful ser
mon. The choir, of which I am a
member, did a good job with the
special music. Joy Huddlestun out
did herself with the organ postlude!
The End of a Beautiful Day
Eating that day was “pitifully
poor.” Dinner at home was a small
serving of cereal. At 3:30 I enjoyed
a half cup of applesauce. For sup
per, I had a piece of Mrs. Vincent’s
plain cake with fruit. Needless to
say, I have not lost much weight.
(Checking this Monday morning, I
had lost three pounds.)
This was a great weekend!
My good news is this: I got back
to writing my articles for the
Progress and working on my next
book: Cherokee Footprints Vol. Ill -
Cherokee Placenames.
I hope that Mother’s Day week
end was good for you also.
