John McGarity successful
in championship cycle racing
John McGarity, son of Janet
Short of Jasper, took a pair of wins
in the Championship Cup program
at Daytona International Speedway
in February.
He had one easy win and the
other he came from third to first in
the final seconds of the race.
In McGarity’s first win, which
was his first ever at the Speedway,
he took the lead on the fifth lap of
the six-lap race and ended up win
ning by two seconds.
In that Expert Heavyweight
Supersport race, he rode a Suzuki
GSX-R750.
In the second win, he won the
Expert Heavyweight Superbike
class, executing a difficult move at
the end.

New amateur photo contest
looking for winners
The twelve winning photos of
our monthly photo contests for the
year 2004 will have a chance to win
again in the finals!
Pickens Progress photographer
Damon Howell says, “This end-of-
the-year contest will not be judged
by just one person as the contest is
judged now.
Instead, after the December win
ner is picked, [the Progress] will
put the twelve winning photos of
the year on [their] website, and
from there the viewers will pick the
winning photo.”
The photo contest started as a
way to get the community more
involved in the field of art. Pickens
County is rich with artists of all
kinds, and photographers are of no
short supply now with digital cam
era use on the incline.
Everyone wants to be a photog
rapher, and now it’s easier than
ever.
The Progress and Jasper Drug
Store encourages everyone to try
their camera skills by entering the
photo contest. The winner of the
contest each month has a choice of
taking either 3 rolls of film, or get
ting a poster-size reprint of their
photo.
Jasper Drug Store has agreed to
give a grand prize to the winner of
the year-end contest.
