Jasper Middle School FFA
wraps up busy year

JMS FFA wraps up a very busy
year with an outstanding accom
plishment by Junior Chapman, the
chapter’s vice president. Members
of the chapter attended the North
Region Rally at the FFA/FCCLA
Camp in Covington on May 7-8.
The members were treated to a his
tory-making event when Junior was
elected Junior Representative for
Area I. Junior has been an active
member in the Jasper Middle FFA
for two years now. He has partici
pated in several Career Develop
ment Events as well as raising four
market hogs and serving as the
chapter vice president this year.
Junior was not the only member
recognized at the rally. Other mem
bers receiving recognition included:
Brittany Welchel for High Individ
ual in the Junior Livestock Judging;
Andy Bishop for 2nd in the FFA
Quiz Bowl; Junior Chapman with a
5th in Middle School Ag Science;
and Thomas Turcotte, Junior Chap
man, Brittany Welchel, Addison
Wright and Andy Bishop all
received Gold Emblem awards for
their Record Books.
Jasper Middle School is proud of
the accomplishments for the 2003-
04 members and wishes the 8th
graders continued success as they
transition to the high school chapter.
As for the middle school chapter,
new faces will lead them through
the upcoming year. Officers for the
2004-05 year are as follows: Andy
Bishop - President; Addison Wright
- Vice President; Katie Puzio - Sec
retary; Jacob Edwards - Treasurer;
Courtney Carver - Reporter; Dustin
Hancock - Sentinel; and Scott Chas
tain as Chaplain.
Good luck to those officers as
they plan to carry JMS FFA to its
highest level yet.

Mrs. Anna Lee Moss and Mrs.
Donna Garrison presented their stu
dents jointly in a piano recital on
April 24. It was held at the First
Baptist Church of Talking Rock.
Students played their selections
and, following presentation of cer
tificates and awards, a small recep
tion was held in the church fellow
ship room.
Angela Payne received a special
award for the most time spent in
practice, while Jill Boling, Hannah
Boling and Kelley Tidwell received
awards for performing in a public
function. Congratulations to these
students.

The annual spring piano recital
“Eine Kleine Nachtmisik” (a little
night music) was performed Satur
day evening, May 15 at the Talking
Rock First Baptist Church by stu
dents of Patricia Adams. The pro
gram featured all students in both
solo and/or duet, ensemble and
piano duo selections played on two
pianos.

hours.

All students received certificates
of participation and the 19 students
who took part in the Piano Guild
auditions on May 6 received their
Guild certificates as well. Three stu
dents, Elizabeth Jasperse, Tyler
Roper and Linda Wheeler, received
a special Beethoven pin for com
pleting their 5th National (10 piece)
Guild programs. Their pictures will
appear in the international publica
tion Piano Guild Notes, winter edi
tion.

School board to hold
called meeting
The Pickens County Board of
Education will conduct a called
board meeting on Thursday, May 20
at 6 p.m. to discuss the board mem
ber vacancy vacated by Joan Locke.

Missions Fair
Jasper United Methodist Church
is holding a “Missions Fair” on Sun
day, May 30 to showcase different
mission organizations, local and for
eign, that are available to the mem
bers of JUMC who are looking for
opportunities to volunteer. If your
organization needs volunteers and
would like to participate in the fair,
please follow the guidelines and
contact either Mike Ledford or
JUMC office at 706-253-2100.

What we need to make the Mis
sions Fair successful:
• RSVP to: Mike Ledford; 692-
9053 day, 770-893-2585 evening,
by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 21. This is
your contact person. They will be
able to get answers to any questions
you may have.
• Provide a description of your
mission or outreach program, in one
short paragraph, to include in our
Mission Fair Brochure. We need this
ASAP!
• Volunteers to man your booth
who can explain your mission and
tell people how being involved with
your mission has impacted their
own life. *Booth Time: Sunday 9:15
until 9:45 am (after early service)
and 11:45 until 12:30 (after late
service).
IDEA: Booth staff could dress in
keeping with the country or destina
tion of your outreach or wear T-
shirts or badges that bear your mis
sion’s logo.
• Volunteers to set up and tear
down your booth (set up is on Satur
day, May 29, any time from 9 to
noon).
• Decorations and snacks that
will attract people to visit your
booth or tie in with your country or
destination (or delay the rush to the
Steakhouse!).
• A banner, poster or photos
describing your outreach (remem
ber: “A picture can say a thousand
words”). If they don’t “get it” in
about 60 seconds, they won’t get it!!
• A handout or brochure to be
given to people to explain your out
reach.
• Schedule an orientation meet
ing within two weeks after the Mis
sions Fair.
• A volunteer to send thank you
letters or emails to everyone who
indicated an interest in your mis
sion, reminding them of your orien
tation date.
• A volunteer to contact those
who are unable to attend the orienta
tion meeting, to assimilate them into
your outreach.
