At Historical Society meeting on May 25
Marble Hill to be featured
Three Pickens County residents with life-long ties to
Marble Hill will provide the Marble Valley Historical
Society Program on Tuesday, May 25 at 7 p.m. at the
Pickens County Library.
Luke McClain, Barbara Jones Cline, and Louise
Jones Brown, will give an informative program about
Marble Hill, where all three grew up and had family
members in the mercantile business.
McClain's family was associated with the Harbin and
McClain Store for many years. His mother, I. V.
McClain, was postmistress.
Cline's great-grandfather was Sion Lawson who
operated the historic old store on Lawson Federal
Road, and her mother, Gertrude Jones, operated a gro
cery store in Marble Hill from 1948 until April 1966,
except for one year when Troy McAfee operated the
store.
Brown's uncle, Reuben Jones, operated a grocery
store on Pea Ridge Road at Dug Road. The program
will include numerous old photographs of the Marble
Hill area.
The meeting is free and open to the public. Don't
miss what promises to be an entertaining and informa
tive program.
If you have photographs of former Pickens County
sheriffs, deputies or revenue officers, please contact
Mimi Jo Butler at 706-301-9078.
A display is being prepared for the Old Pickens
County Jail.
Dr. Zeller celebrates 50 years as a priest
The Ven. Dr. E. Jerome Zeller,
former rector of Holy Family Epis
copal Church, shared the 50th
anniversary of his ministry with the
congregation Sunday, April 18. He
delivered the sermon for the day.
After the service members greet
ed him and his lovely wife Pat at a
reception in the Parish Hall.
Fr. Jerry came to Holy Family in
1996 as a short-term consultant but
remained until his retirement in
2003. Under his guidance, a new
church was erected on Cove Road.
At its dedication he said, “Holy
Family Church is built upon servant
leadership and outreach. We have
now a wonderful place to increase
our strength and deepen our rela
tionship with God.’’
Congratulations Fr. Jerry. The
membership of Holy Family recog
nizes and celebrates with you.

On Saturday, May 8, 2004, the
Pickens County S.A.F.E. Shotgun
Team traveled to Rock Eagle to par
ticipate at the state 4-H competi
tion. Over a six hour period, each of
the 855 high school students was
thrown 25 small clay pigeons in 92-
degree heat.
The three top shooters were
Chris Wright, Seth Evans, and
Clark Beecken. Although Chris and
Seth shot over 20 clay pigeons, no
one on the team shot the required
perfect score to advance to the next
level. John Bishop, Ethan Fields,
Tobin Harvall, and Dustin Woodall
each shot respectable scores. How
ever, the scores of the vast majority
of the trapshooters from all schools
suffered due to the extreme heat.
