Pickens delegates attend state GOP convention

Pickens County Republicans
Local delegates travelled to
Columbus, Georgia to attend the
GOP State Convention on May 14th
and 15th.
The convention was held in the
Columbus Civic Center.
The atmosphere for the gathering
was cast as Republican National
Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie
delivered an upbeat keynote
address. He said," The U.S. econo
my added 288,000 new jobs last
month, 625,000 over the past two
months and 1.1 million over the last
eight months. In addition, econom
ic growth over the past three quar
ters has been the fastest in nearly 20
years. At a 5.5 percent annual rate,
it will double the size of the econo
my in 13 years".
The speech was enthusiastically
received by all in attendance.
Governor Perdue and Senate
Majority Leader Bill Stephens
spoke of the legislative accomplish
ments of the past two years. Both
expressed their confidence that
many bills now stalled in the Geor
gia House will be passed in the next
session as they believe the Republi
cans will become the majority party
of that body.
U.S. Senators Saxby Chambliss
(R.Ga.) and Zell Miller (D.Ga) were
welcomed with a standing ovation
as they entered a Bush-Cheney

Kiker to address
Republicans

Residents of Pickens County
will have the opportunity to meet
Chip Pearson and Scott Kiker at
the next local GOP meeting on
May 20th, at 7 p.m. in the audito
rium of Pickens High School.
Both candidates will face oppo
nents in the July
20th Republican
Primary.
Chip Pearson
is vying for the
Republican
nomination for
the State Senate,
District 51. In
addition to Pick- Chip Pearson
ens County, Dis
trict 51 includes Dawson, Gilmer,
Fannin, Union, Lumpkin and parts
of White and Forsyth Counties.
Pearson is the founder and
president of Pecos Inc. and Para-
mont Grading Co. which special
ize in real estate development and
heavy construction.
He serves on the Boards of a
number of industry and civic
groups as well as the Northeast
Georgia Council of the Boy
Scouts of America. Pearson said
he is seeking office because,"I
have faith in America and a vision
for what Georgia can be. I have
faith in our families and what
every person can achieve given
the opportunity. I am committed to
defending our freedom".
Chip, his wife Jill and their
three children live in neighboring
Dawson County.
Scott Kiker is an attorney in
Fannin County and is seeking the
Republican nomination for Dis
trict Attorney.

Leadership Meeting.
Over 500 delegates paid rapt
attention as the Senators extolled
the record and accomplishments of
President Bush. They hailed his
domestic tax policy for being the
impetus for the recovery we are
experiencing and his determined
fight against terrorism. Senator
Miller, while praising Senator
Kerry's service in Viet Nam, took
him to task for being weak on
defense and quick to raise taxes.
Congressman Mac Collins and
Johnny Isakson and businessman
Herman Cain addressed the 2000
delegates, alternate and guests.
They will face each other in the July
20th Primary to determine who the
Republican Candidate will be for
the Senate seat currently being held
by the retiring Senator Miller. Each
pledged their support for President
Bush's programs and initiatives, his
efforts to fight terrorism and to
appoint constitutionally sound Fed
eral Judges.
Kevin Osborne, Chairman of the
Pickens County Republican GOP
Inc., summed up the two day con
vention, "It was inspiring to hear
and feel the optimism of the speak
ers and the confidence of the candi
dates we met during the course of
the convention. Our delegation left
Columbus energized and ready to
work for the re-election of President
Bush and the election of state and
local candidates.

Lions induct new members
The May 13 meeting of the
Jasper Lions Club was a picnic (that
went indoors because of the weath
er) and Loud Shirt Night. It was
also a time when two new members
were inducted and two special
scholarships were awarded.
The new members were Rebecca
Lathem sponsored by her mother,
Lion Darlene Lathem, and Jeff Ben
nett sponsored by Lion Jan Simp
son. Past District Governor Charles
Chapman performed the induction
ceremony.
It was a night new Lion Rebecca
will long remember for she was also
awarded two scholarships from the
club - the 2004 PHS Leo Club
Community Service Scholarship
and the 2004 PHS Leo Club Lead
ership Scholarship for her outstand
ing work at school and in the com
munity. The awards were presented
by Scholarship Committee Chair
man Lion Allen Wigington.
Lion Peggie Chapman was
awarded a 5-member pin for having
sponsored five new members.
Past District Governor Ray
Moore and his wife Liz were visit
ing the club and he presented the 1st
prize award in the Loud Shirt con
test to Lion Nancy Maddox. Second
went to Jeff Bennett and 3rd to
Leslie Miller.
In other actions, the group dis
cussed plans for the upcoming
Health Fair, the Lions University
meeting at the First Baptist Church
May 22 and the State Convention
June 18-20 to be held in Savannah.
Incoming President Jan Simpson
gave an update on plans for the
annual Independence Day celebra
tion that will be held July 3 this
year.

Eastern Star hosting gospel singing
Jasper Chapter #479 of the Order
of Eastern Star will be hosting a
gospel singing to benefit their annu-

May 23, 2004 marks the two year anniversary for the death
of one of Pickens County’s finest! Darrell was tragically
killed in a plane crash, however, his memory will live on for
ever thru his family, friends and community. Prior to
Darrell’s death, he had made several improvements at the
Pickens County Airport and had attended several meet
ings trying to get additional things approved that would
benefit the Airport and also the County. Darrell’s parents
are in the process to have Airport Drive renamed in mem
ory of their son. Darrell was loved by all and his memory
must live on.

May 29 beginning at 7 p.m. at Pick
ens County Middle School. Dona
tions will be accepted at the door.
Everyone is invited to come out and
have a wonderful evening.
VFW Meeting
The VFW will meet at Pickens
Library Wednesday, May 26 at 7. If
you want to keep a VFW post in
Jasper, we have to have members
come to the meeting. Please attend.
