It was just about 8 a.m. on Satur
day when Dan DeJiacomo, a local
builder, and his team of “pros”
joined forces with a group of Habi
tat for Humanity volunteers to
“blitz frame” a house. Early in the
morning there was nothing but a
foundation and concrete walls for
the basement. By noon the base
ment was framed and the floor and
supports for the first floor were in
place. At the end of the day, the
house was framed, the felt was on
the roof, and the workers were
excited. The pictures tell the story.
On-lookers and support workers
were amazed at the speed and skill
of the work crews. Mr. DeJiacomo’s
framing crew was led by Mike
Moran, Bobby Boring, and Richard
Gayle. Mr. Dejiacomo also
arranged to have the house wrapped
by Rex Nelson at no charge to
Habitat, plus Alvarez Roofing came
back and put the shingles on the
roof. Watson Coffee, a Habitat vol
unteer, said, “we are weeks ahead
of our schedule, thanks to this great
effort on the part of Dan and his
crews.”
Shawn Lee, the Habitat owner to
be, was on the job too. He was
working to get his “sweat equity”
done on the house that his family
expects to move into later this year.
“Up to now, it was just a dream, but
now I can see the reality of it all; I
can see where my children will
sleep, where we will eat dinner and
relax,„This is great!” said Mr. Lee.
“We will be working on the house
most Saturdays for the next few
months,” says Ron Ceravolo, Habi
tat’s Construction Chairman, “come
on out and help us build.”
A Habitat “Hats Off” to Dan
Dejiacomo and all the professional
volunteers he brought to the job
site. Dan Macari, President of HFH-
Pickens County said, “It’s so great
to get a jump start on our house like
this. It will move our family into
safe, decent and affordable housing
sooner than we could have done it
ourselves. Thanks a million.”
If you would like to get
involved, come out to Twin Oak
Trace, off Hood Road at about 8
a.m. on Saturday, or call the office
at 706-253-2393. If you would like
to help pay some of the expenses of
building materials, send your tax-
deductible donation to P.O. Box
1072 Jasper, GA 30143.

2003-04 Super District
for Quality Schools
The Pickens County Schools
System was recently notified by the
Executive Directors of the Commis
sions on Elementary, Middle and
Secondary Schools of the Southern
Association of Colleges and
Schools (SACS) of receiving a spe
cial recognition to those schools’
districts where all eligible elemen
tary, middle and secondary schools
are accredited. The district is con
sidered a “2003-04 Super District
for Quality Schools” and was con
gratulated for its “...schools’ accred
itation accomplishments and contin
ued success in improving educa
tional opportunities for the young
people served.”
For 2003-04, there were 512
school districts in the 11-state
SACS region that qualified for this
recognition. The number by state is:
Alabama - 58; Florida - 41; Georgia
- 61; Kentucky - 52; Louisiana - 11;
Mississippi - 47; North Carolina -
52; South Carolina - 55; Tennessee -
76; Texas - 8; and Virginia - 51.
SACS accreditation is non-gov
ernment and voluntary, and it helps
educational institutions improve
through a systematic process of
evaluation that focuses on improv
ing teaching and student learning.
SACS accreditation assures not
only that an institution meets mini
mum standards, but also that it
demonstrates a commitment to con
tinuously providing quality educa
tional programs.
An alliance between SACS and
the Commission on International
and Trans-Regional Accreditation
(CITA), which is comprised of the
six regional accreditation commis
sions and several related organiza
tions, i.e. the National Council for
Private School Accreditation and
the National Study of School Evalu
ation provides every elementary,
middle and secondary school that
holds SACS accreditation the addi
tional benefits of national accredita
tion and international recognition
through CITA.
SACS accreditation ensures ben
efits to a school and its community,
including:
• a mission and goals focused on
improving student performance and
the school’s capacity to improve
teaching and learning;
• a collaboratively developed
improvement plan that includes
methods for measuring student
progress and involves key school
stakeholders;
