THURSDAY. JUNE 28. 2007 PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS PAGE 3A
From the Progress files
Turning back the pages: June, 1950
(Editorial column, 1950)
Next week is the Fourth of
July, Glorious in past history -
the birthday of Freedom, and we
often wonder if modern
Americans realize what this
Freedom really is.
It means that a man has a
right to personal liberty, a
reward for his labor, a profit
from his investments, a fair trial
by a court when accused of a
crime, he is never told if he can
or cannot worship or how he
may worship his God. He is not
told how he should cast his bal
lot.
It also means that a free man
has the interest of his communi
ty and performs public duties to
make it better, for he is one of
the rulers of the country. The
duty to inform himself on public
issues and to cast an honest bal
lot, to serve on juries and other
duties as the public interest may
demand.
Our forefathers paid a great
price for freedom in blood, tears
and money. Surely Americans of
today will not go to sleep and
lose this priceless heritage.
Have as joyous, safe holiday!

Come hear the Callaway
brother’s exciting story of
God’s provision and protection,
during Freedom - an inspira
tional music presentation of
patriotic songs, skits and testi
monies. It all begins at 6:15
Sunday evening, July 1 at
Foothills Community Church.
The Callaway brothers
returned last April from deploy
ment as part of the Georgia 48th
Infantry Division to Iraq. Spc.
Ryan Callaway, was a Scout in
Troop E, 108th Calvary, which
spent much of its time conduct
ing cordon and search opera
tions, reconnaissance missions,
raids and even air assault mis
sions in places like Iraq’s
“Triangle of Death’’ north of
Baghdad, and in cities such as
Maumadiah, Talil and Balahd.
During the last half of the unit’s
deployment their focus shifted
to escorting convoys and even
bringing together military and
civilian entities in one city to
create a city council - a concept
that was completely new to this
particular municipality. Spc.
Jared Callaway was a Bradley
driver and a member of the 300-
member Georgia’s 1st
Battalion, 121st Infantry.
Both men are decorated sol
diers. Both men are strong
Christians. Upon their return to
the states, they took part last
July in a mission trip to Beirut
Lebanon. Again they were put
in harm's way when fighting
and bombing broke out all
around their mission team. It
was touch and go for the whole
mission team for several days.
Foothills Community
Church is located at 13274
Hwy. 53, just past the Foothills
