Pickens woman charged with
April murder of husband
In that story she acknowl
edged that she had cleaned up
after previous methampheta-
mine use. She had maintained a
3.6 grade point average in the
courses, which dealt with the
legal system.
Her husband said in that
story, his wife did so well she
had inspired him to go back to
college. They were living in a
household with six children at
that time.
She referenced in that story
past meth use. She said she
turned her life around after
DFACS took custody of one of
her children.
She was quoted as saying in
that story that her turnaround
from drug user to paralegal had
been a “miracle.”
While arrested in a house
with meth, sheriff officials
would not comment on whether
they played any role in the mur
der, but did note Poole was not
charged with any drug related
offenses.

Commissioner’s meeting
following the completion of the
county's administrative building
earlier this year.
Jones said he does not expect
the remodeling to require a total
demolition of the building. He
said the county is seeking plans
that will allow the annex build
ing to be used for the next five
to ten years.
“This is not a long-term plan.
The building is past its prime,”
said Jones.
After the architect is finished
with the plans, hopefully by
next week, bids will go out for
the construction project, said
Jones. He said he hopes the
project will be finished, and the
new offices will be in use by the
end of this year.
Part of the agreement with
JKH was also a request to pro
duce “tentative” plans for a
parking deck near the annex,
and renovation of the main
courthouse building.
Jones said those plans are
being developed to prepare the
county for the next SPLOST
sales tax vote, which will take
place in February 2008. Funds
raised from that vote, if
approved by the voters, will go
to the construction of a new
courthouse, or renovation of the
existing building.
Funding for the annex reno
vations will come from the
county's general fund.
JKH Architects, Jones said,
has designed other courthouse
buildings in north Georgia,
including in Gilmer County and
Fannin County.
The agreement for all the
services requested of JKH cost
the county $19,680, plus an
hourly rate if any additional
work will be needed.
In other county news:
• The commissioner signed a
resolution earlier this month
adopting a “personal appearance
policy” to the Pickens County
employee policy handbook. The
new rule was adopted, said
Jones, to ensure that county
employees are dressed and
groomed in a way that is appro
priate to a “business-type
atmosphere.”
• Jones also adopted a rule
entitled “civic and political
activities” for the policy hand
book. The new rule states that
while all county employees are
free to engage in any political
activity they choose, such activ
ity is prohibited on county prop
erty and may not be funded with
county tax dollars.
Specifically, it states that no
political literature may be
placed on county property, and
employees may not let their
political activities interfere with
the time they are at work on the
county's clock.
The policy also says the
elected officials are prohibited
from using political pressure
towards employees to encour
age them to influence an elec
tion.
“I don’t want any employee
of the county to feel they are
being browbeated into support
ing the sitting administration,”
said Jones. “And people should
n't have to worry about if their
job is going to still be there after
the next election.”
• The commissioner also
signed an agreement to provide
$3,500 for the Department of
Juvenile Justice to provide psy
chological evaluations for
offenders. Jones said the fund
ing is renewed annually.
• Changes in zoning classifi
cations on three pieces of prop
erty were approved by the com
missioner.
Two of the changes were for
smaller properties with single
residences. They were changed
from Agricultural to Rural
Residential. A third property,
226 acres in size, was changed
from Agricultural to Rural
Residential. The owner of that
property has plans to develop a
39-lot subdivision.
All three changes were rec
ommended by the planning
commission at its June meeting
earlier this month. The property
owners presented their plans
and reasons for the rezoning
requests before the commission.
The commissioner conducts
a monthly meeting the fourth
Friday of every month, at 9
a.m., at the conference room of
the Pickens County administra
tive building on East Church
Street.
