At Chamber Breakfast
State Rep. Tom Graves discusses
challenges in Georgia politics
Pickens County Chamber of
Commerce held their June
Membership Breakfast on
Tuesday, June 12.
The breakfast was attended
by over 150 people. Chairman
of the Board, Jerrold Young,
welcomed everyone and the
Invocation was given by Jerry
Daniels; after which, Savor
Bar & Grill served breakfast.

Executive President Denise
Duncan announced Chamber
membership goal for June 1 had
been reached with 550 plus
members. She pointed out the
new directories were in.
Members not in attendance are
encouraged to drop by the
Chamber to pick up a directory.
Duncan invited all members
to the Chamber Picnic in the
Park on July 26 sponsored by
Jasper Banking Company.
She also encouraged every
one to attend Jasper Night at the
Rome Braves game on August
4.
Jasper Drugs & Gifts was the
sponsors of June’s breakfast.
Jack Dunn, owner and
Pharmacist, gave a brief history
stating that the store opened in
1952 and moved to its present
location in 1971.
Their mission statement
“Jasper Drug Store is more than
you can imagine” rings true.
They have a wide assortment of
fine gifts for every occasion.
Their first class photo lab is the
only in town that reproduces
pictures. They take pride in
personal hands on picture devel
opment and photo restoration.
In keeping with a growing
trend, a Compounding
Pharmacy has been added. This
goes back to the old way of get
ting your medicine without all
the fillers found in most modem
day mediations.
A gift of poster size photos
featuring three beautiful
Pickens County scenes was pre
sented to the Chamber.
Ambassador Don Martin
introduced guest speaker state
Representative Tom Graves.
Graves came from St.
Petersburg, Florida to Ranger,
Georgia and attended The
University of Georgia.
Representative Graves spoke
about the dissension in
Washington stating that the
Republicans have succumbed to
too many years of being in
power and have gotten compla
cent, fat and happy and are con
tinuing to spend the taxpayers’
money. Georgia is the only
state that had
Republican gains in
last year’s election.
He told the
group about the 216

They believe excess
revenue should be
there for emergency purposes
but it belongs to the taxpayers
and after budgets are met, the
taxpayer should get change
back.
He further stated that there
are 1,200 different taxing
agents, 130 special tax exemp
tions and 100 ways the state col
lects tax dollars.

for vote including House Bill 26
which will allow retired doctors
to work non gratis for places
like Good
Samaritan.
There will be
a vote that all

should have the

offer cable
through telephone
lines. Also up is a
vote to allow
choice of school,
based on disabili
ties and special
needs. Graves
ended by stating
this is a time for
our country to seek God’s guid
ance look at less taxation and
less government and take per
sonal responsibility.
