No waiting at the Jasper Farmers’ Market
Plenty of Vegetables
By Darla Huffman
Last week's Market had peo
ple crowded around the com
and tomato sellers at 7:30 in the
morning, hoping to get to the
front of the line before the veg
etables ran out. This week there
were more vegetables and less
waiting. Most of the popular
summer produce was available;
okra, corn, tomatoes, beans,
squash, zucchini, cucumbers,
cabbage, peppers, onions, garlic
and potatoes, from many of the
35 venders that came out for the
Jasper Farmers' Market this
week.
Tina Silvers of Broken T
Farms took advantage of a lull
in customers to string a few
green beans. She said she had
canned 67 quarts already.
Someone was buying beans as I
left her, so she probably sold out
soon, as did many vegetable
venders.
Gardener’s get ready! Next
Saturday, July 14, will be the
start of the annual competition
to determine the ‘Biggest, Big
Ole Tomato’ and the ‘Longest
Home-grown Squash.’ There
will be a contest with a weekly
winner every Saturday, judging
to be at 10 a.m., all through July
and August. The grand prize
winner, the biggest and longest
of the weekly winners will be
announced on the last Saturday
of August for tomatoes and
summer squash. The winter
squash competition will contin
ue until the last Saturday in
September.
Terry Daniel was back this
week, bringing more of his prize
winning wood turned bowls. He
said his bowls had created more
interest than his beautiful hand
crafted tables. Another wood
worker who was at the Market
for the first time, Keith
Herndon, also makes turned
wooden bowls, candle holders,
oil lamps and other vessels.
Some of his items were decorat
ed with very striking bands of
inlaid turquoise. He also gives
lessons in woodworking at his
studio in Jasper.
Landscaping plants are still
available at the Market. Kerri
Cornett from Creekside Nursery
in Ranger had some very nice
trees and shrubs. Mimi Tritt had
interesting ferns and other shade
loving plants.
A charming display was cre
ated by the fresh flowers avail
able from Jenny Fellenbaum
and buckets full of sunflowers
from Caryn Presswood and
Marie Tromblee (a.k.a. the gar
lic lady).
Beginning with Wednesday,
the Market will be back in its
usual location at the parking lot
in Lee Newton Park. It isn’t as
shady but the parking is much
better. Come out and meet your
neighbors and help yourself to
some fresh, locally grown pro
duce.
The Jasper Farmers' Market
is open every Saturday from
April 21 to Oct. 27 (with this
exception: no Market Oct. 6)
and on Wednesdays from June
20 to August 29. The hours are
7:30 a.m. -12 p.m. and we are
located in the Jasper Park and
Ride Lot just off of Hwy. 53
next to the Chamber of
Commerce and Lee Newton
Park. Only homegrown or hand
made products are sold at the
Jasper Farmers’ Market.
The Market is organized by
the Master Gardeners of Pickens

Democrat party picnic
Irene Taylor reminds NGP
members that the Pickens
County Democrats are having a
pot luck picnic on July 17 at 6
p.m. at Lee Newton Park (near
the Chamber of Commerce).
This will be a chance to get
together and meet other Dems

bring some chairs also.
Please let Irene know if you
can come and what you’ll
bring, applelop@ tds.net
NGP picnic will be held on
August 28. A reminder will be
sent out in early August.
For our July 24 meeting
we're joining the League of
Women Voters at the Big
Canoe Lodge at 7 p.m. for an
entertaining and informative
program in which a Supreme
Court Session will be reenact
