Thanks to Dan and Jeremy

ing the sound equipment for
narration during the parade as
well as music before and after
the parade.
The 2007 theme was Stars
and Stripes Forever and Cindy
White, Dan Davis and Jewell
Aaron were on hand as judges
to choose the floats that best
represented the theme. The
winning floats: #1 - First
Christian Church of Jasper with
a Puppets for Praise theme of
the Adventures of the American
West. #2 - the Happy Red

by Me with their float depicting
raising the flag on Iwo Jima in
World War II showing the deter
mination to keep the stars and
stripes flying forever.
Grand Marshals of the
parade were volunteers from the
Good Samaritan Health and
Wellness Center honoring all
volunteers in our county.
And what a great group of
participants in the parade. Cub
Scout Pack 288, members of the
American Legion Post 149, the

the fireworks), Richard

such as this cannot do justice to
the impact a parade has on the
viewers.
Special thanks to A & G
Machinery Transport for pro
viding the reviewing stand.
Many thanks to Chief Harold
Cantrell and members of the
Jasper Police Department and to
Sheriff Billy Wofford and mem
bers of the sheriff's department
for their assistance in security
and crowd and traffic control
during all the activities of the
day. Also to Chief Roper and

Department and Pickens County
Rescue.
At Lee Newton Park -
Following the parade, activities
moved to Lee Newton Park with
opening ceremonies taking
place at the bandstand. The
Town Band directed by Dr. Carl
McCurdy played the National
Anthem and members of the
Honor Guard of Chapter 47
DAV conducted flag cere
monies followed by a 21 gun
salute. Rev. Von Hinton gave
the invocation. Float awards
were presented.
Entertainment - Lion Leslie
Miller lined up an outstanding
group of entertainers for the
event. Lions Darlene Lathem
and Doug Brooks served as
MCs during the day and Patton
Childers did outstanding work
with the sound system provided
by Mark Miller and also per
formed occasional guitar/vocals
selections during intermissions.
Dr. Carl McCurdy and the
Town Band got the entertain
ment underway with a selection
of patriotic songs. Other per
formances followed: Suzanne
Stewart singing an original
patriotic song, the Sweet Taters
Quartet - Thelma Cagle, Marcia

and Lynn Wood, the Mike
Robertson Band - Exit 326, Bay

p.m. the C.C. Morgan Band
took over until 10.
At that time the winner of the
2007 Dodge Ram 1500 truck
giveaway sponsored by the
Jasper Lions Club was
announced. The happy winner
was Susan Keener of Talking
Rock.
At about 10:10 the 2007
spectacular aerial fireworks dis
play got underway sponsored by
United Community Bank on
Camp Road. We are grateful to
Jamie Tallent, president and
CEO, for this very generous
contribution to the Celebration.
Other activities in the Park
- Peachtree Rides of Alpharetta
was with us again to provide an
assortment of exciting rides and
other amusements for children
and adults. There were games
for the children. The ever-popu-
lar Bingo games activity was
conducted by Pat and Roy
Sellers with assistance from
other Lions. Thanks to D&D
Manufacturing Co. in Holly
Springs for donating the great
prizes and to Denise Duncan
and the Chamber of Commerce
for use of the patio and furni
ture.
There were vendors on hand
with food and a variety of sou
venirs. Lions were all over the
place seeing that everything
went well and also manning
some of the booths.
It takes may Lions, family
members and friends along with
splendid cooperation of local
businesses, governmental
groups and other groups to put
on this type of celebration each
year. In addition to those recog
nized above, add thanks to
Ingles, Goss Tractor Co., A.W.
Lawson, Jr., Melrose
Pyrotechnics and Scotty Dodd,
PCMC Leo Club, Jasper Drug
Store, Moore Furniture Co.,
Bank of North Georgia, Gary
Copeland and Jones Oil Co.
And getting the word out
about this and other Lions activ
ities would really not be possi
ble without the continued sup
port of the Pickens County
Progress, Radio Stations
WYYZ and WLJA and ETC -3
Television.
Proceeds from the celebra
tion realized by the Jasper Lions
Club will be used for their many
community service projects dur
ing the year and the members
are very appreciative of the con
tinuing support of the citizens of
Pickens County. The club’s
motto continues to be “We
Serve” and the club members
take the motto seriously.

PAR’S FUR BALL Event
Coordinator Susan Catton said
“Our team of volunteers has
been working on this fundraiser
since April and we plan to make
this be the event of the season.
It’s important that we make time
to celebrate the past 10 years of
amazing service by our volun
teers and regular financial sup
porters. We’ll be celebrating
the lives of thousands of pets
that have been saved and the
future pets to be rescued in our
growing community. We
encourage everyone who lives
or works in Pickens County and
is an animal lover, to get
involved in this organization,
some how, some way.”
Sponsors are still needed for
this event. Watch for upcoming
promotion of this exciting
evening as our sponsors come
together and our ticket outlets
are identified. For more infor
mation, visit PAR’s Web site or
contact Susan at 770-894-7037.
