From the Progress, files.
Turning back the pages: July, 1950
(From Ed. Column 1950)
As this edition comes off the
press, American ground troops
are engaged in battle in South
Korea. The Air Force and Navy
are already fighting, and the
British Navy and Australian Air
Force are assisting our forces.
Korea, a country ruled by its
own monarchs for many cen
turies, was conquered by China.
Japan took it from China a little
more than fifty years ago. At the
close of World War II, it was
supposed to be free, with
America sponsoring the South
half until a peace treaty was
signed and a permanent govern
ment established.
As a result of the different
theories of government held by
the Americans and Russians,
Korea was divided into North
and South Korea. Russia organ
ized an army of North Koreans
and then withdraw its troops.
South Korea also organized
some forces but they were not
equipped.
On June 25, North Korea
invaded South Korea. America
appealed to the United Nations
and North Korea was branded
the aggressor and ordered them
to withdraw and if they refused,
member nations would drive
them out.
Plans are underway for
immediate erection of a home
for the Pickens County Post of
the American Legion. Estimates
and specifications are being
worked out and bids will be
asked for in the next few days. It
will be built on the Legion lot
next to the home of Mrs. Isaac
Grant.
The 1951 membership cards
are here and everyone is asked
to get their new card from Mrs.
Joe Scarlet, Jr. at the Veterans
Service Office, or from Joe
Scarlet, Sr., adjutant, or Bud
Pickett, Commander.

Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Jasper, celebrated
Vacation Bible School the week of June 18-22
with the Theme “Rescue Zone” saved by God’s
Grace. The average attendance each day was 140.
Each day the children were given the privilege
of hearing from local and state rescue and public
safety personnel. Monday, the Jasper Fire
Department visited with their fire truck, Tuesday
the Pickens County SWAT team, Wednesday, the
Pickens County EMS truck and Thursday, the
Georgia State Patrol helicopter.
What a treat for the children to get to visit with
these important public servants and see the equip
ment they work with. Under the direction of Mrs.
Susan Echols, the week was a tremendous success
of songs, Bible stories, skits, crafts and refresh
