Just north of the Court House and fyf
across Court Street...(This would be a good A. 'A i
trivia question...asksomeone the name ofthat
street?) is the Edge Building. If you don’t believe $ZJ\e\
me, just look atthe top ofthe building...ithas \T'
EDGE carved on a a piece of white Georgia ~ at,
Marble. The Edge family built the building
around the turn ofthe 20 fh century. It’s the home of “The Pickens
County Progress" and has been since before baseball was invented.
Back in the 50’s the “Progress” was located in only the left side ofthe
building. It still is, but now occupies tie middle also. In the middle,
when I was a small kid was Robinette’s 5 and 10 Cent Store. It was,
without a doubt, the coolest store in town for a 7-year-old kid!! When
you walked in the front door, the first thing you saw was a glass front
counter full of every kind of candy you can imagine!! Juststart
pointing and Mr. Robinette or one of the ladies fiat worked for him
would start filling up a small brown paper bag. MAN, I can taste
those chocolate drops right now!! He had sugar coated orange
slices that I crave even to this day. Every flavor of jellybeans that you
could think of was there also. They had toys that cost a nickel and
dime. The old wooden floor was oiled and would squeak at every
step. On the right side ofthe building was Mr. Bud Pickett's law
office. It had Pickett, Pickett, and Pickett on the front window. Never
understood why it had three names till I was a grown man. The Edge
building has as upstairs that had business offices in them also. I can
only remem berthree...Mrs. Violet Leonard had a beautyshop...Dr.
B. H. Lee had his dental office and Mr. Ralph Roper had another law
office. MY dad always told the story of standing out front of the
Rexall Drug Store one day and a stranger in town approached him
and asked where he could find a lawyer in town. Mydad pointed
across the street and said, “ Bud Pickett is justacross the street and
Calhoun Roper is above him. Around the comer is Hershel Shelton
and just under this building on the back street is Jenkins and
Landrum.” The stranger asked which one would he recommend and
mydad told him, “It don’t make a d which one you get, you’ll wish
you had got the other one!!”
Just beyond the Edge Building where the new parking lot is
now was an old house and maybe even two...I just can’t remember.
The little brick building that’s still just below the new parking lot was
many things over the years. I can remember a jewelry store and a
barbershop...I think. The building that Denson insurance and
George Weaver’s Law office is in was an empty lot.
That pretty well was Main Street, Jasper in the 50’s. In the
next couple of weeks, we'll talk aboutsome of the businesses OFF
Main Street and some ofthe characters that owned them...
