BRAG riders returning to Pickens County
August 25 & August 26,2007
Jasper, Georgia
By Mimi Jo Butler
After a quick overnight in
Jasper during last summer's
bicycle trek across the state,
BRAG (the Bike Ride Across
Georgia) returns this August for
a shorter jaunt but a longer stay.
For BRAG's Summer Ride 2007
(the weekend of August 24-26)
Jasper serves as jumping off
place for a pair of two-wheeler
day trips roughly 50 miles each.
The 57-mile Saturday jaunt
routes riders through sections of
Pickens, Forsyth, Dawson and
Cherokee counties. The Tate
House and communities of
Nelson, Ball Ground, Mica,
Barrettsville, Yellow Creek and
Holcomb lie along this route.
Sunday's ride, the 50-mile
Burnt Mountain Challenge
takes riders north over Burnt
Mountain into Gilmer County
and Ellijay with a return through
Talking Rock. Members of the
Jasper Middle School Booster
Club will staff rest stops along
the way.
Local sponsors of the week
end cycling event are the
Pickens County Chamber of
Commerce, The City of Jasper,
the Jasper Downtown
Merchants Association, the
Marble Valley Historical
Society and Jasper Middle
School.
Look for 500 riders to roll
into Jasper Friday afternoon,
August 24, for two full days of
pedal pushing. Expect a tent city
at Lee Newton Park both Friday
and Saturday nights as cyclist
campers fill the green and uti
lize the Chamber of Commerce
Building and Jasper Middle
School for restrooms and show
ers.
Some riders will probably
lodge at local hotels and motels.
And as last summer, look for
riders packed into Jasper restau
rants at evening for a day's-end
dose of Southern hospitality.
The Marble Valley Historical
Society is set to offer guided
historic tours along Jasper's
Main Street Friday and
Saturday afternoons of that
weekend. Tour reservations are
required. Call 706-253-1141 for
reservations.
The Chamber of Commerce
will sponsor Friday night's
entertainment for cyclists at Lee
Newton Park. And that Saturday
night, the Jasper Downtown
Merchants Association will host
a street dance on Main with the
C. C. Morgan Band.
Included in Saturday night
diversions downtown will be
the traditional 4th Saturday, col
lector car cruise-in and Arthur
Atkins' vintage bicycles at the
Old Jail. The Old Jail itself and
log cabin on its grounds will be
open all three days of Summer
Ride weekend. Local residents
are invited to join in activities
on both Lriday and Saturday
nights.
The local BRAG Committee
is coordinating all volunteers,
special events, hospitality and
the information station at the
Chamber of Commerce
Building, plus goody bags for
cycling participants and special
nightly entertainment for the
Pickens County community and
BRAG riders.
Any business with items to
donate for goody bags or any
individuals wishing to volunteer
to help with activities should
contact the Marble Valley
Historical Society at 706-253-
1141 or the Pickens County
Chamber of Commerce at 706-
692-5600.
The local BRAG committee
is set to meet again after
Summer Ride preregistration
deadline, July 31. Additional
information on the ride is avail
able over the Internet at
BRAG's website
(brag.org/SummerRide.html) or
at www.knowpickens.com.
