Happy Ramblers
Mama and Dad’s first
grandchild was born on July
28 many years ago. It was a
most joyous occasion in the
Quinton household, we were
all just thrilled to death. Mama
went to Atlanta to stay with
Jim and Annette for a week or
so and help care for the new
baby boy, Michael. At that
time we still had a milk cow
and Mama was the one who
did the milking. I think maybe
Don could milk and Tom was
suppose to know how I reck
on. Anyway, he was the one
trying to milk on this day I am
writing about. Mama had told
us how much feed to put in the
feed pan for Bossy to eat while
she was being milked. I had
gone down to the cow shed
with Tom to milk and was
helping. Tom was very slow
and she ate all the allotted feed
and Tom was still trying to
milk so she stepped around
and stepped in the milk buck
et! Well, I went back to the
house and got another milk
bucket and we got some more
feed and took another try at
milking. Things went along
pretty well for a short time and
then again the feed ran out
and Bossy was tired of stand
ing there so she started moving
around and kicked over the
bucket!
Girls at this time often wore
a silk scarf around their neck (I
can’t imagine why I had one
on to go milk but I did). Tom
said he would just tie her legs
loosely together so she could
n’t step in the bucket and so
the scarf was the handy thing
to use. He tied it around her
legs and she just took a step
and the silk scarf was ripped
all to pieces! We quit trying to
milk that morning and by
afternoon had decided the best
thing to do was take Bossy
down to Mama Waldroup’s
and let Mary do the milking.
Later one of the Disharoon
boys came over and stayed the
rest of the week with us and
done the milking.
That is just one of the funny
things that happened to us
when we were left without a
Mama in the house. Mama
never worked outside the
home so we were used to hav
ing a Mama there all the time.
She never left us to just “go
off’ hardly even to visit a
neighbor, but if some of the
folks were sick and needed her
on a few occasions she did
leave us for a day or so.
