Cares sponsors back-to-school program
CARES Financial Assistance
ministry has kicked off its annu
al Back-to-School program to
benefit clients of CARES, Inc.
(the Community Food Pantry in
Jasper).
Bob McCallum, Broker at
Craft Real Estate gave a $500
donation to Judy Ferris, finan
cial counselor at CARES.
Several local churches are
asking their congregations to
donate back packs and/or mone
tary donations to help fund the
program this year, which pro
vide gift cards from Goody's for
clothing, back packs, school
supplies and free hair cuts.
The program serves existing
clients of CARES who are sin
gle parents or grandparents rais
ing grandchildren.
Back packs may be delivered
to CARES on CARES Drive
(just behind the Community
Thrift Store) on Mondays
between 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. and
Fridays between 8:30 a.m. and
noon. Back packs may also be
delivered to Craft Real Estate on
Bent Tree Drive in Jasper as
well as the Episcopal Church of
the Holy Family, First Baptist
Church of Jasper, and New
Lebanon Presbyterian Church.
Checks made out to CARES,
Inc. and marked Back-to-School
may be sent to CARES, Inc., P.
O. Box 1342, Jasper, GA 30143.
CARES Financial Assistance
has sponsored the Back-to-
School program for the past four
years. Needy families with lim
ited incomes face financial
hardship each year when cloth
ing and shoes must be pur
chased for their children for the
new school year, as well as back
packs and required school sup
plies.
Last year CARES moved to
its new location on CARES Dr.
and now serves approximately
145 families each week.
Emergency financial assistance
is provided to families experi
encing a sudden loss of income
due to illness or injury.
Clients may apply for assis
tance with past due utility bills
or rent as well as other emer
gency needs and cases are han
dled as funds permit. This assis
tance in many cases prevents
homelessness.
Clients are informed of other
local resources as appropriate.

funded each year by donations
over and above those CARES
receives for its normal operating
costs. CARES relies on the sup
port of local churches, business
es, and individuals to provide
food and emergency financial
assistance to needy families in
Pickens County.
The Back-to-School program
served over 35 children last year
and to date has received applica
tions for over 70.
Persons making donations to
CARES may receive a receipt
for tax purposes, as CARES is a
501(c)3 non-profit organization.

to provide services for food and
emergency counseling. Anyone
wishing to volunteer may call
Larry Starr, director at CARES,

ROAD TO OPEN SHORTLY — Mayor John Weaver said Friday the new portion of road
extending from the intersection on Highway 53 through the commercial development to
Highway 515, should open in the next few weeks based on discussions he has had with the
developers involved.
Weaver said he has kept up with progress, but the city is not directly involved in the road
work or opening. He said the road is subject between two private developers but will be
made a public road after opening.
Tate Elementary to host its second annual
‘First Day of School Celebration”
“1
The first day of school for
Tate Elementary students and
their families is no ordinary first
day of school. In 2006, the TES
faculty was introduced to the
First Day of School America
initiative which encourages
families to be involved in the
education of their children start
ing with day one. Now, in 2007,
this celebration goes on without
hesitation or question.
Teachers, administrators and
members of the school's PTO
are excited as they have been
working this summer to plan
another spectacular experience
for TES students and their fam
ilies. The celebration provides
opportunities for parents to visit
classrooms, meet other parents,
enjoy entertainment, sign-up for
various activities throughout the
school year and, most impor
tantly, share in the first day of
school experience with their
child. Additionally, our PTO
will be sharing tips on how to
effectively communicate with
your child's teacher.
Parents and TES families are
invited to join us as we cele
brate the beginning of another
great year on Friday, August 3.
A parent breakfast will be held
in the Bulldog Cafe at 8 a.m.
followed by a school-wide
assembly at 8:30. Other sched
uled activities for parents and
students will continue until
noon. Students will then return
to their homerooms for the
remainder of the day.
We hope you will make plans
to join Tate Elementary as we
celebrate the first day of school!
Historical Society continues taking
prepublication orders of “Heritage”
By request, the Marble
Valley Historical Society, Inc.
will continue to offer a prepubli
cation price for Heritage of
Pickens County Georgia 1853-
1998. Through August 15, the
price will be $70 per copy plus
$4.90 tax for Georgia residents.
The mailing price will be $78
plus $4.90 tax. The books have
been ordered and will be deliv
ered in September. The 510
page book has been out of print
for six years and this will be a
welcome addition for
researchers and those interested
in the history of Pickens County
and her families.
Order forms for the book
may be found at Moore
Furniture, Pickens County
Library and the Old Jail. The
History of Pickens County
(1935) by Luke Tate and
Pickens Past (compiled by
MVHS and Bob Davis) are both
in short supply and will not be
reprinted. Those books may be
purchased at the three sites men
tioned above. Mr. Tate’s history
covers the history of the county
from 1853 to 1935 and the
Heritage book brings the history
to current times.
Saturday, July 21, the Old
Pickens County Jail and Kirby -
Quinton Cabin will be open
from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. for
tours. The Society has deter
mined that the earlier hours are
more appealing to the visiting
public. For information, call the
Society at 706-253-1141 or visit
the Web page at marblevalley.
