The discussion then centered
on 19 local activities of the
club, outlining the pluses and
minuses of the activities togeth

the new officers and board
members as they complete
plans for 2007/08.

League of Women Voters to host
Property Tax Forum on July 21
Submitted by Kat Alikhan
The League of Women
Voters of Dawson and Pickens
Counties will host a property tax
forum - with an emphasis on the
current Pickens County seniors’
school tax exemption and the
pros and cons of possible
changes to that exemption -
from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on
Saturday, July 21 at the Pickens
County Administrative Building
at 1266 E. Church Street, Jasper.
Participating at the event will
be Roy Dobbs, Pickens County
Tax Assessor, and and Clint
Mueller, Legislative Director of
the Association of County
Commissioners of Georgia. Mr.
Dobbs will explain the current
Pickens County seniors’ school
tax exemption. Mr. Mueller will
offer information on what other
Georgia counties have done
regarding a seniors’ school tax
exemption and the impact to
those counties of having the
exemption. In attendance will
be Rob Jones, Pickens County
Sole commissioner, and Larry
Toney, Pickens County
Economic Development direc
tor.
“I know the issue of a sen
iors’ school tax exemption is
controversial and that there have
been many discussions about it
over the years,” said Kat
Alikhan, president of the
League of Women Voters of
Dawson and Pickens counties.
“Recently, I’ve heard enough
people talking - on both sides of
the issue and everywhere in
between- to believe that there is
still plenty of discussion needed
on the topic.”
The event is free and open to
the public. Attendees will be
given ample opportunities to
ask questions and express their
views on the subject. Light
refreshments will be served.
