New mural at Talking Rock
By Jeff Warren
Travel west out Old Highway
5 from Jasper, and you will
encounter a new landmark as
you approach the town of
Talking Rock. A hand-painted
12x8 mural now adorns the end
wall of Talking Rock Station,
Patrick and Lori Linville's
antique shop beside the intersec
tion of Highway 136.
Originally the brainchild of
Mary Ann Manzel (who runs
The Talking Rock Exchange),
by sanction of the town council.
the mural became a team proj
ect. Talking-Rockers combined
efforts to move the idea from
artist's sketch to finished presen
tation.
Keep Pickens Beautiful
helped with project costs, as the
completed work aids KPB's ini
tiative to place one such mural
in each Pickens County town.
Actual painting began in March
with the concept drawing trans
ferred onto three upright sheets
of MDO board.
"That depicts the town as we

think it looked in the 1880's,"
said Talking Rock Mayor Pete
Cagle.
The mural features a promi
nent steam locomotive and the
old Talking Rock Depot, now
gone. And the picture includes
most of the business district
along Talking Rock's main drag.
County historian, Reverend
Charles O. Walker, helped
painters form an accurate depic
tion of a two-story tavern that
once stood downtown where
Talking Rock's city hall-fire-
house stands today. The painting
also shows the Talking Rock
Schoolhouse up the hill from
town and Talking Rock Baptist
Church well beyond town cen
ter.
Talking Rock business owner
Mike Marchbanks (Cool Water
Distribution) and
Councilwoman Lynda Cagle
joined Manzel for the paint
work, an arduous process that
stretched from late winter to
July 7th.
Professional artist Daniel
Norris (of Art & Soul, Inc.),
who painted the Trail of Tears
mural at Jasper, served Manzel
and company as consultant on
this mural.
"And he did the lettering,"
Mayor Cagle said.
A banner at the top of the
mural reads: "Talking
Rock—EST. 1883." It was the
year the railroad passed that
way, and the old town of Talking
Rock packed up from its origi
nal location near Blaine and
moved to the creek and the train
tracks alongside the Old Federal
Road.
Soon thereafter, the town
became the commercial center
of Pickens County, a cotton rail
head, where a steam-powered
gin converted the raw, harvested
fiber to bales that shipped over
the railroad.
The mural includes loaded
theft by taking, Wilderness
Parkway Big Canoe; terroristic
threats and acts, W. Creekview
Dr. Jasper; criminal damage to

but are not listed individually in

the same time:

cotton wagons standing by with
bales to put on the train. Artists
filled the mural with interesting
detail: a girl walking her dog;
long-eared mules; a doctor; a
lawman; a woman at the post
office door; a cat on a porch rail.
Manzel said mural artists
painted on MDO (Medium
Density Overlay) board for
greater durability of the finished
mural compared to painting
directly on a building. MDO
board is exterior plywood with a
weather-resistant resin surface
bonded to the wood and is a
choice material for painted com
mercial signs.
Councilmen Randall Payne
and Charlie Opdenhoff built a
wood frame on the end of
Talking Rock Station to mount
the mural, and they re-squared
the frame when the painting ini
tially would not conform. Re
squaring took two additional
hours of labor, Mayor Cagle
said, but after the adjustment,
the mural "fit like a glove."
"Randall Payne and Charlie
Opdenhoff are the two that did
all the hard work," Lynda Cagle
affirmed.
Tuesday, July 17, saw the
official dedication of the mural
with local dignitaries in atten
dance: County Commissioner
Robert Jones; Superior Court
Judge Harry Doss; Chief
Deputy Allen Wigington; Hazel
Mosley of the Jasper City
Council. All witnessed the
unveiling of the new artwork
that adds interest and flavor to
Talking Rock's quaint locale.
