Someone asked me this week
“Who do you think is the best
one in your cast?” And I tried to
give them a well thought-out
and honest answer and I
tried and tried.
And as I went over each per
son in the cast in my mind,
every one of them came alive,
just as they have done on stage
for the past six shows.
I finally said “Every one of
them.”
This was not just my attempt
to dodge the question or give an
easy answer. The cast members
and crew gave, each in his or her
own way, a one hundred percent
effort for our audience, with
obvious success.
From the most veteran of our
Tater Patchers to the newest
actor who'd just been “roped in”
by some friend for the show,
they all were an integral part of
what may be one of the most
successful shows to come out of
the Tater Patch Players' thirty
year history.
The forty-nine cast members
were like the ingredients in real
ly wonderful soup. You start
with a huge variety of the very
best vegetables and spices.
Put ‘em in and stir, boil them
a little and then let them sim
mer, and suddenly all the very
different ingredients are a beau
tifully blended and delicious
mixture, appetizing and satisfy
ing to one and all.
It was certainly our best
show in terms of attendance.
We set a Tater Patch matinee
attendance record and then set
an evening attendance record.
Well over a thousand people
saw the show during its six per
formances.
For this, I must give credit to
several sources. First, to all our
loyal fans and supporters. You
have lifted us up over the years
and continue to attend our
shows and to talk us up to all
your friends.
And so our audience, who, as
Marryin’ Sam said “we loves
and respects,” continues to
grow.
The Pickens County Progress
has been extremely supportive
of our efforts. We’ve had arti
cles contributed by several peo
ple, a delightful review by Jean
Curran, and wonderful articles
by our Publicity Chairman, Pat
Jewell.
Last week's photos by
Progress photographer Damon
Howell were wonderful icing on
the cake. So, thanks to the
Progress staff for giving us great
space and placement in our
hometown paper.
Our production staff and
wonderful music director, Ellen
Whitten, gave us a beautiful set
ting in which to serve our
“soup.”
This was only Ellen’s second
show with us, and her first as
music director. Even though I’m
pretty sure we wore her hands
and fingers out, and that we
wore her patience thin on a cou
ple of occasions, she remained
dedicated and right there for us
every step of the way.
To Janie Whitfield, who let
us use the Old Bargain Bam as a
rehearsal space, we are deeply
indebted. It’s almost become a
second home for us. And to
Principal Chris Williams,
Drama teacher Marcia Wright (a
first-rate Mammy Yokum, by
the way) and the staff at Pickens
High School, many thanks for
working so generously with us.
We would, quite literally, be
cast adrift without you.
I have been truly grateful to
work with this fine group and
hope to do so for many years in
the future. We appreciate our
community's continued support
and attendance and hope to see
you in the shows of the upcom
ing season: Blithe Spirit, Our
Town, and A Midsummer
Night's Dream.
We will continue to work
toward our dream of a home of
our own to bring you better and
better community theater, and
we deeply appreciate your sup
port as we pursue this dream.
