Joyful Noise: Jasper gets a homeschool band
Jasper Cruise-In This Saturday
By Daniel Cumming
Playing in the school band is
a luxury most homeschooled
children don't have besides
playing with siblings, but that
will change for Jasper this year.
Nadine Harrison is organiz
ing a Jasper chapter of the
Joyful Noise Homeschool Band,
a collection of combos, orches
tras, bands and classes in
Marietta.
The Joyful Noise Band start
ed 12 years ago, according to
the website, when Susan Davis
wanted a musical education for
her own children, who she
homeschooled. She hired a band
director and began the program
that would eventually grow to
almost 200 students.
Harrison use to commute
with some of her own children
to Marietta every week to take
part in the program. She sung
praises of the Christian-based
program, but wanted to create
her own.
“I just felt like the need was
here in Jasper,” she said. ‘‘There
are enough homeschoolers in
Pickens County.” She realized
that a lot of people in Pickens
might participate if the practices
were held closer.
The classes will be offered
every Thursday at the Living
Word Church, a few miles north
from Jasper on Main St., with
programs for children age 6 all
the way through high school.
Even parents can participate.
‘‘Parents are welcome to join
the band,” Harrison said. “Not
every parent had the opportuni
ty to be in band when they were
younger.”
For beginners, so new they
have not chosen an instrument
to begin on, there will be an
“oration” on Aug. 23. An ora
tion is where different mouth
pieces of instruments are tried to
see how they fit the child's
mouth in order to choose an
instrument.
Most students pick up a par
ticular instrument simply
because they have one in the
closet at home, Harrison said.
While the Marietta Joyful
Noise Band has an orchestra,
advanced band, jazz band, and
even a guitar class, Jasper will
have a recorder class, beginner
band, and intermediate band to
start off with.
“It won't be before long
when we get a jazz band here in
Jasper,” Harrison said. “I'm
sure this will grow to be the
same as Marietta’s Joyful Noise
program.”
The bands will be directed by
Chris Walston, the jazz band
director for Joyful Noise in
Marietta. He will be the one to
impress when students audition

for intermediate band.
“Logistically there's a great
support group in place that
allows me to do what I do best,
which is show up and teach,”
Walston said.
Though Walston is a paid
professional, most of the pro
gram is run by volunteer home-
school parents to keep the cost
down for the students that
enroll.
To register, families need to
print off a form from the web
site, joyfulnoiseband.com, and
pay a $60 registration fee and
$120 for band tuition for the
year. But do not sign up lightly,
because the fees are not refund
able once classes start. This is
because the spots must be
reserved, and the supplies for
the number that sign up are
ordered.
“There's benefits out of sign
ing yourself up for something
and then not quitting,” Harrison
said.
Just as in public or private
school bands, there will be con
certs held at the end of each
semester. The fall concert band
will perform Nov. 15, and the
recorder class will hold a recital
on Nov. 8. In the spring, the
concert band concert will be
May 8, and the recorder class
recital on May. 1.
Students will be required to
provide an instrument, a band
stand, music books, and concert
dress.
All classes begin Sept. 6, so
break out the old flugelhom or
oboe, homeschoolers, and get
ready to make some Joyful
Noise.
