Local detachment of Marine Corp League
seeks input, support of residents
Submitted by Wayne Poore
Pickens County residents
turned out in record number for
the Independence Day Parade. It
is wonderful to see such enthu
siasm and patriotic support. One
group that marched in the
parade is a new organization in
Pickens County that focuses on
helping our local active and
retired Marines and Navy
Corpsman who have served
with the Fleet Marine Force.
As you watched the grand
display of fireworks or as you
bit into a nice grilled hot dog or
hamburger with your friends
and family, I hope you took just
a moment to reflect on why we
have such a great nation. The
freedoms we enjoy each and
every day are only because of
our military men and women
who bravely defend this coun
try.
Whatever your views are
about the current conflicts our
military are involved in, they all
deserve our full support.
This newly formed
organization has coordinat
ed with Hill City Cafe to
host a Craft and Gift Basket
fundraiser. Don’t miss this
opportunity to support our
local military community on
Saturday, July 28 from 10
cun. to 7p.m. at Hill City
Cafe. Enjoy great food and
fun with menu specials,
hourly prize drawings and
grand prize drawing for a
$50 gas card.

help with the needs in our local
area. However, your input is
needed to accomplish this goal.
Citizens and military families
are invited to contact this group
or attend their next meeting at
Hill City Cafe, 4611 Hwy. 533
W, the third Saturday of each
month at 8 a.m. Contact Steve
Smith, 770-355-3713, or Wayne
Poore, 706-692-2836, for more
information.
The current goals include,
but are not limited to:
• facilitate overseas commu
nications through the Marine
Corps chain of command:
• emphasize support and
communication with families of
young Marines:
• research and assist in sup
port and rehab for injured
Marines who are located out
side the geographical area of the
normal rehab bases;
• provide information and
contacts for national mission
aimed at the youth of America;
• assist retired and honorably
discharged Marines and Navy
Corpsman;
• local campaigning and par
ticipation in the annual Toys for
Tots Christmas gift collection
drive.
The Marine Corps motto
“Semper Fidelis” (Always
Faithful) describes a Marine’s
commitment to the US, the
Marine Corps and each other.
That commitment holds true for
Marines now serving and those
veterans who will never forget
their service. Remember, this
group was formed to service
and assist in the specific needs
of Pickens County so your
strong support is needed to get
them off to a great start.
