Environmental Health
Manager comments on
groundhog incident
Public should
avoid any contact
with wildlife for
safety of animals
By Dan Pool
Jan Stephens, the Environ
mental Health County Manager,
responded to a story in last
week’s Progress about a motorist
who stopped to help an injured
groundhog saying that no one
should handle any wildlife.
Stephens said she recognizes
the motorist had good intentions
after seeing the groundhog get
hit by a car, but her actions could
have lead to the animal being
shot, with its head cut off for ra
bies testing.
“If that animal had bitten her
or anyone, I would have had to
test it for rabies,” she said. “That
woman would have signed the
groundhog’s death warrant by
picking it up.”
Stephens said it is against the
law for people to handle any
wildlife because of the rabies po
tential and out of concern for the
animals’ well-being. She said her
only professional concern with
her job is rabies, but animal bites
can lead to all kinds of other in
fections.
Groundhogs are not known as
a major carrier of rabies, but
there are a few cases involving
them reported every year in the
United States, Stephens said.
“Rats, chipmunks, squirrels
and other small rodents generally
don't become rabid because an
attack by another animal is usu
ally fatal,” she said. “Ground
hogs are large enough to survive
a bite, so might actually be in
fected. This is one of the reasons
that the State of Georgia bans
handling of wildlife by anyone
other than licensed wildlife res
cuers or officials in the Depart
ment of Natural Resources. “
Stephens said the correct way
to handle a situation when some
one spots an animal obviously
suffering is to call 911 and report
it, so that call can be relayed to
state game officers.
