Following a summer break,
the Pickens County Retired Edu
cators Association resumed its
scheduled meeting for the 2010-
11 school year. The initial meet
ing was held at Dunn’s
Restaurant on Sept. 8. President
Jesse Hunter called the meeting
to order, greeted those in atten
dance and offered the invocation.
Lawton Baggs led the Pledge of
Allegiance.
Jean Chastain, vice presi
dent/program chairman, intro
duced Ryan Greenfield to speak
to the group. Mr. Greenfield is a
representative of Association
Member Benefits Advisors
(AMBA). He explained the
many benefits available to local
members that are also members
of the Georgia Retired Educators
Association. Among those men
tioned were a variety of insur
ance offerings, a tax-deferred
annuity, medical air service,
travel/vacation packages, health-
related services and products and
discount buying. AMBA is avail
able to advise and assist any
GREA member in selecting those
benefits that best suit his/her
needs.

sons remembered on that occa
sion. Both had retired after years
of service at Jasper Elementary.
Following the beautiful tributes
paid by Mrs. McDaniel, Presi
dent Hunter allowed Mrs.
Payne’s daughter Sandra and
Mrs. Bagg’s husband Lawton to
respond.
Bobbie Edge reported that
Jesse Hunter will be a nominee
for GREA director from Area
XV in the next election cycle. It
was unknown at the time if there
would be other nominees. The
local Association proudly en-
this unique and valuable 19th
century Cherokee treasure. There
will be lots of activities such as
demonstrations of DNR Search
and Rescue dogs (10 a.m., 1 and
3 p.m.) and Winged Ambassa
dors birds of prey program
(10:45 a.m.), a Dutch oven cook
off between teams of Girl and
Boy Scout troops (judging at 1
p.m.) and Cherokee artists and
historic demonstrations through
out the day. Special musical
guests, recording artists Chero
kee Rose & Silena, will be per
forming throughout the day. Also
appearing are Eastern Band of
Cherokee member Robin Jumper
and the Jumper Family Dancers
and singer-storyteller Gary
Greene.
Our state parks and historic
sites need your support now
more than ever. As the economic
situation in Georgia worsens,
legislators are being required to
dorsed Mr. Hunter for the posi
tion.
Attendees at the September
meeting enjoyed the usual vari
ety of excellent foods offered at
Dunn’s. Both the quality of foods
and services are appreciated by
members and guests.
The next meeting will be Oct.
13 at the same location. Impor
tant Constitutional amendments
will be considered at that time.
All members are encouraged to
attend and to bring a prospective
member.
trim state funding for most state
agencies. Funding for Georgia
State Parks and Historic Sites has
been dramatically reduced over
the past two years resulting in
service limitations, layoffs, de
layed maintenance and many
other reductions. Many sites are
surviving with less than adequate
staffing, but you can (and do)
make a difference. Without the
help of volunteers like your from
across the state, many of Geor
gia’s treasures would be threat
ened or closed to the public.
Along with Friends of Georgia

Georgians are coming together to
help SAVE our treasured re

one to come and support New
