on real property (land with
houses or buildings), 88 percent
of taxes for personal property
(airplanes, boats, etc.) and 100
percent of county taxes for tim
ber land. In all, the county has
collected $30,026,869.14 in
taxes for 2009, with $968,851.72
still outstanding.
Troglin said payment must be
made in full on a FiFa-ed parcel
before the property will be pulled
from the tax sale.
“We can’t accept partial pay
ments. The reason for that is
there is no law stating we have
the authority to do that. But I’m
hopeful there will be some peo
ple that can come in and pay be
fore they go to sale. The majority
of them I would say will pay. I
know everybody’s having a hard
time right now and trying to do
the best they can.”

Pickens residents may be able
to sleep a little easier now.
AirLife Georgia, a subsidiary
of Air Methods Corp., has estab
lished a base near the Jasper Air
port and Pickens County
Fire/EMS Station 11 that will
provide quick and easy medical
assistance to the region.
“This is a greater way we will
be able to serve people of this
community,” said AirLife Geor
gia Business Director Russell
McDaniel, who spoke at a cere
mony held at Station 11 last Fri
day.
“We appreciate you allowing
AirLife Georgia now based in Jasper
us to come into your house,” he
said. “We hope this will be a
long-term relationship.”
According to McDaniel, the
new base in Pickens is a station
relocated from Cherokee
County.
Speaking at the ceremony,
Commissioner Robert Jones
expressed his gratitude for the
new base. “For Pickens Coimty
to have AirLife stationed here
is a real asset to the people
here,” he said.
Air Methods Corp. is the
largest air medical transporta
tion company in the world.
They have six bases north of
Georgia’s fall line, including
Newnan, Conyers, Gainesville,
Griffin, Kennesaw, and now
Jasper.

Early voting
underway

polls, whether on election day or
for early voting. With early vot
ing just begun, election office
staff said Tuesday the handful of
voters thus far had taken a long
time to complete the ballot.
Roberts said the average per
son would likely need some time
and references to understand the
statewide questions. She said the
state offers a website
(www.vote.ga.gov). Go to that
website and then click on the
“my voter page” link to get fur
ther information. The web page
offers what the state considers an
unbiased explanation of the state
constitutional amendments to ap
pear on the ballot.
While most voters may be fa
miliar with the heated governor’s
race, they will also see lesser
known races for secretary of
state, attorney general and com
missioners of labor, insurance
and agriculture.
Local races that may be of
more interest include state repre
sentative, where Rick Jasperse
(R) faces Jerry Nalley (D), and
state senate, where Steve Gooch
(R) faces Joseph Mann (D).
There will be three school board
races on the ballot, but all are un
contested.
Roberts said, “There are a lot
of races. You really should study
the sample ballot before you get
there.”
She said voters may have
questions about all of the lesser
known races or ballot questions,
but by they time they arrive at
their polling place, it’s too late to
ask. It is also strictly prohibited
for any election personnel to ex
plain anything or discuss any
race, candidate or question on a
ballot at a polling location.
Roberts said voters may leave
some races blank. She said there
is a long-held misconception that
if you leave any race blank, the
whole ballot is void, but this is
not true.
She noted there could be frus
trated voters if they bog down or
give up during all the amend
ments, forgetting that the multi
man versus sole commissioner
question comes at the very end.

amendments, see an article in
next week’s Progress or check
