YLP Steering Committee, pre
sented the leadership opportunity
to the youth leaders and dis
cussed the structure and guide
lines for the YLP.
There was a lot of excitement
and interest among the youth
who attended the Orientation.
Everyone had heard about the
benefits from participants from
previous years, and were looking
forward to learning about how to
be a leader.
When asked what he wanted
to learn, one student said, “I want
to learn how to get people to fol
low you.” Another student was
already in a position of leader
ship with the Pickens High
School cheerleaders. She wanted
to improve her leadership skills.
When asked about what was an
important leadership trait, one
student said, “A big smile.” It
was clear that these students
were in a positive leadership
learning mode.
The YLP mission is “to ex
pose the youth of Pickens
County to leadership experiences
by creating an environment
where they can make a positive
impact of issues that affect
teens”. In eight monthly “hands
on” leadership development ses
sions, the youth interact with
local adult community and busi
ness leaders to learn what it takes
to promote health, safety, charity
and prosperity in the community
of Pickens County.
The YLP sessions include
Leadership/Teambuilding, con
ducted by Imerys Marble Com
pany; Local Law Enforcement,
conducted by the sheriffs office;
Business and Social Etiquette;
the Govemment/Judicial System,
all day field trip; Financial man
agement; Resumes & Interviews
(an adult mentor for each partic
ipant); Downtown Scavenger
Hunt, Jasper/Pickens History,
conducted by the Marble Valley
Historical Society; YLP Gradu
ation (group presentations from
YLP participants).
For each session, YLP partic
ipants will work in teams of three
to produce news releases for the
sessions, with mentoring support
form the YLC Steering Commit
tee. YLP participants will also be
selling golf balls for the “Golf
Ball Drop” at the Pickens County
Chamber of Commerce annual
golf tournament to raise funds to
support YLP.
The YLP Steering Committee
organizes the YLP program each
year, and receives financial,
mentoring and program support
from approximately 50 busi
nesses, individuals and
public/non-profit agencies.
