TEA Party to host
candidates forum Sept. 28
By Nancy Davis
According to Plato, “One of
the penalties of not participating
in politics is that you will be gov
erned by your inferiors.” Per
haps this will inspire many of
you to come to the Pickens
County TEA Party Sept. 28
meeting at 7 p.m. at Chatta
hoochee Technical College to
meet the candidates and find out
what they say they will do for
you if elected.
We have invited Georgia
Governor nominees, Nathan
Deal and Roy Bames; Georgia
State Senator Nominees for 51st
District, Joseph Mann and Steve
Gooch; Georgia State Represen
tative nominees for the 9th Dis
trict, Jerry Nally and Rick
Jasperse; andU.S. House Repre
sentative Tom Graves who runs
unopposed. The Independent
candidates have also been issued
invitations. Anyone wishing to
ask questions of these candidates
needs to submit the question to
penny.barker@pickenscoun-
tyteaparty.com prior to the meet
ing. This is being done to assure
maximum use of time and mini
mum disruptions to the proceed
ings. Since time is limited, we
want to be sure that decorum is
maintained and all candidates are
given a fair and equal chance to
convince voters they are the right
candidate for the job.
Also invited are the Pickens
Progress, KnowPickens.com,
WSB-TV, WAGA-TV, WGCL-
TV and WXIA-TV to offer max
imum coverage to the candidates
who might be hesitant to accept
because they do not think Pick
ens County offers enough cover
age for their campaigns. On
Sept.22, the Pickens County
TEA Party representatives will
sit down at 8:30 a.m. with Cherie
Martin of ETC-TV to talk about
the program and how it is being
presented. We hope you will all
tune in for the program.
From the Sept. 28 Countdown
to November Pickens County
TEA Party meeting, we have 35
days to hear the candidates and
decide on our voting preference.
This presents a great opportunity
to educate, inform and motivate
voters to get out and vote. The
Pickens County TEA Party is
non-partisan and supports no
candidate. We feel that the voter
should always decide for them
selves without being swayed by
one person or group telling you
how to vote. This is what makes
our American Republic unique
providing information and then
letting the voter exercise his
Constitutional right to make up
his own mind.
Even though early voting be
gins on Sept. 20, we hope you
will participate in this program
before you cast your ballot. The
evening will be eventful and full
of information. So don’t forget to
send you questions to penny.

didates your questions.
See you Sept. 28 at Chatta

Dispose of old prescription drugs Sept. 25
The Pickens Sheriff’s Office
and the Pickens County Anti-
Drug Coalition are joining the
DEA and law enforcement agen
cies throughout the United States
to observe the National “Take-
Back Initiative” on Sept. 25 from
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pickens
County Courthouse.
The National Take-Back Day
provides an opportunity for the
public to surrender expired, un
wanted or unused pharmaceutical
controlled substances and other
medications for destruction.
These drugs are a potential
source of supply for illegal use
and an unacceptable risk to pub
lic health and safety. This one-
day effort is intended to bring
national focus to the issue of in
creasing pharmaceutical con
trolled substance abuse.
Prescription drug use has be
come the fastest growing drug
addiction in our youth today.
Many parents and family mem
bers have unused prescriptions
sitting in their homes and are un
aware of the potentially lethal
dangers that these doctor pre
scribed medicines could be. It is
our goal to educate our commu
nity as to the extreme dangers
that these prescribed medicines
present.
The program is anonymous;
prescription and over the counter
solid dosage medications (tablets
and capsules) accepted; and
Intra-venous solutions, injecta-
bles and needles will not be ac
cepted.
This Initiative is being used
by the Pickens Sheriff’s Office to
launch an effort to continue al
lowing individuals to get unused
prescription drugs off of the
streets. After the Initiative, Sher
iff Craig will announce a location
for future prescription drug drop
off sites.
Join us by bringing by all of
your expired, unused or un
wanted medications. Together,
we will make a difference!
