Friends meeting hears delightful speaker
Lions and LEOs continue
to serve as a beacon of hope for
the blind and visually impaired
At the library, there was a
general meeting of the Friends of
the Pickens Coimty Library Sept.
16 at 7 p.m. Friends Board
Chairman Ray Bowyer wel
comed those attending and in
vited those who were not
members to join the Friends. Ray
introduced Vice President Janet
Vardaman who introduced the
guest speaker, John Shivers.
John is without question a
Southerner! He was already
thinking of becoming a writer at
the age of 11 and began his ca
reer at age 14 writing for his
hometown newspaper in Cal
houn, Ga. During his early years
he wrestled with a call to enter
the ministry, but finally chose to
pursue a writing career. A free
lance writer, editor and story
teller, his byline has appeared in
over 40 Christian and secular
publications, winning him 16
professional awards.
He has now published five
novels - Ftear My Cry, Paths of
Judgment and Lift Up Mine Eyes,
a trilogy on domestic violence
and two volumes in a “Renew A
Right Spirit Trilogy” called Bro
ken Spirit and Merry Fteart. His
wife Elizabeth was with him at
the meeting and they live on a
family farm in Plainville, Ga.
At his white writing board,
John engaged those attending in
an exercise where they went
through the steps of creating a
character in a novel. It was ques
tion and answer session in which
the traits of the character were
developed: a female named
Suzanne, age 32, brown hair,
blue eyes, favorite color - pink,
favorite food - spaghetti, can’t
stand spinach, not married,
works as vice-president of a
computer manufacturing com
pany. Betsy is her best friend, her
hobby is painting, she drives a
black Honda Civic, ambition is
to be president of her company,
spends her free time chilling out
by walking by the lake and has a
small Maltese dog named Rosie
as her pet.
Now getting to all of the
Lions president Monroe Swilley at his post on Jasper’s Main Street.
Members of the Jasper Lions day morning to collect funds for
Club and LEO clubs gave their our Send-A-Kid to Camp pro
time Friday afternoon and Satur- gram. Over $ 1,700 was collected
and will be sent to the Georgia
Lions’ Camp for the Blind in
Waycross.
Attending the Georgia Lions’
Camp for the Blind is the high
light of the year for campers,
young and old. They appreciate
making new friends and learning
practical skills in an environment
that encourages independence,
wholesome activity and high
moral values. The camp serves as
a beacon of hope for a better life
for the visually impaired and
your donation is the light that
helps shine the way.
If you know someone who
would benefit from attending the
camp or would like more infor
mation regarding the Camp
and/or if you are interested in
joining the Jasper Lions Club,
please call 706-253-LION
(5466).
We thank each and every one
of you who supported our efforts
to the Georgia Lions’ Camp for
