Coach Dick Helms to address Rotary
Dick Helms
Submitted by Barry Hardison
On Wednesday, Sept. 15, re
tired NBA coach Dick Helms ad
dressed the weekly meeting of
the Rotary Club of Jasper. A vet
eran of over 40 years of coach
ing, Coach Helms spent 16 years
with five NBA teams as an assis
tant to Hall of Fame coach Lenny
Wilkins. He was an assistant
coach under Lenny Wilkins
when he was head coach of the
Atlanta Hawks from 1993 to
1998.
Dick Helms grew up in the
farming community of Tuscola,
II. He graduated from Wheaton
College, in Wheaton (near west
Chicago) in 1955. He has a MA
in Administration from Michigan
State. After serving in the Army
he coached on high school level
for 14 years. He moved to the
college level in 1972 coaching at
Judson College and Wheaton
College. Dick was given the op
portunity to scout for the Seattle
Supersonics and subsequently
spend the next 16 years coaching
in the NBA as an assistant for
Lenny Wilkins with stops at
Seattle, Cleveland, Atlanta,
Toronto and New York.
“All the preparation, doing a
lot of the organizational work,
getting things ready so the prac
tices ran smoothly, all of that
type of thing that would free him
(Coach Wilkins) up to concen
trate on coaching. I think this is
where we really clicked. He gave
me a lot of leeway in that area of
developing everything that takes
place.”
Coach Helms gave an inspira
tional speech about his heritage,
including his mother, and grow
ing up in the 1930s. He shared

four sayings from his heritage
that he patterned his life after.
Over the years he shared these
same sayings with his players.
Many may have forgotten the
plays he taught, but not the influ
ence of these sayings. The say
ings are as follows:
1) Give a little, save a little,
and spend a little.
2) Take the initiative.
3) Finish what you start.
4) You can’t get something for
nothing.
Dick and his wife Andrea
have been married for over 50
years. They are parents of 7 chil
dren and have 17 grandchildren.
Dick now spends much time im
parting these life lessons to his
grandchildren. They make their
home today in Big Canoe, Geor
gia.
