FFA cattle exhibitors begin season
On August 14, several mem
bers of the Pickens County FFA
Chapter begin the 2010-11 cattle
show season by participating in
the Appalachian Cattleman’s As
sociation Heifer Show. The ex
hibitors had a new experience
with the show since it was held
on home-turf instead of the nor
mal venue at the Lion’s Club
Fairgrounds in Ellijay. With the
unusually hot summer that we
have had, it has been difficult to
work with the animals as much
as many of the students normally
do. But all managed to get the
animals broke to lead and pre
pared for this kick-off show for
the season ahead.
The show got underway at 11
with the Showmanship Division.
With the green nature of the
Pickens cattle, some of the ani
mals were not their most cooper
ative during their respective
classes. But first time exhibitor,
A.J. Bray rose to the occasion
and made the final cut in the sen
ior showmanship class.
After a lunch break and the
great food provided by the mem
bers of the Cattleman’s Associa
tion, the exhibitors returned to
the ring for the heifer classes.
The show committee divided the
heifers into Continental and
British classes as well as the
commercial classes for the cross
bred heifers. In the Continental
Breeds, Pickens County FFA ex
hibitors fielded two Charolais
heifers with Courtney Childers’
heifer taking 2nd and Elaina Mc-
Taggart’s heifer taking the 4th
place slot in the class. Pickens
exhibited several animals in the
British breeds including Kaitlyn
Poole’s Shorthorn which placed
2nd, Kayla Collis’ Hereford
Elaina McTaggart (l) and Courtney Childers (r) “Team Charolais”
which cam in 3rd and Pam
Southerland with a pair of 4th
place Herefords. A.J. Bray was
Pickens County’s only showman
in the Commercial weight
classes. Bray’s baldie heifer took
3rd place in its respective weight
class.
The members of the show
team had a great time after fi
nally getting to show the animals
after the many hours of work in
preparation for the show. They
would like to offer their thanks to
the members of the Appalachian
Cattleman’s Association for put
ting on the show and all of the
many sponsors from Pickens and
surrounding counties who gener
ously helped to sponsor the
show. Since this was only the
first show of the season, look for
many more reports on the
progress of all of these young
showmen.
