Happy Ramblers
We had not been to Savannah
in several years, so early Monday
morning we left out on a bus tour
for this very interesting city. We
had 41 folks on the bus but when
we started I only knew Sue and
Peggy (we three were together)
and the tour guide. Some of the
people on the bus remember me
from trips before and I know
why, I talk to everyone! We
stopped in Dublin for lunch and
quite by accident another tour
company paid for our lunch! It
was such a mix-up that it was too
complicated to straighten out so
they said just forget it and we
said aren’t we lucky!
We did a short tour of the
Riverfront before going to our
hotel. Tonight was dinner at the
Pirates House and what a treat
that is, really good food and the
fun of hearing all the stories of
this oldest building in Georgia
(so they say). Our waiter told of
his fame, being on several TV
shows telling of his encounter
with the ghost that haunts this
building. (Much to my delight I
saw him on GPB doing the story
of the Pirates House after we got
home.) He took my camera down
into the tunnel (rum and wine
cellar) and made pictures which
he assured me would have
ghostly images. Well, if you en
large the shot enough and let
your mind run on this, it is a sight
what a camera flash can do!
Tuesday we went shopping
down on River Street and visited
the new open air straw market. I
was hoping for local craft work
but, just like in Nassau, it was
mostly imports. We had lunch at
the Cotton Exchange and had
something new to me - a Turkey
Ruben sandwich. While it was
good, it is nothing like a regular
com beef and kraut Ruben.
We then picked up a step-on
guide for a tour of the Historical
part of Savannah. He told all the
facts of the buildings, squares
and points of interest here. We
toured the Cathedral of Saint
John the Baptist which was built
in 1873 and is beautiful with all
the stained glass and statues.
Leaving there it was out to
Tybee Island. I just couldn’t re
sist getting into the water there at
the beach, even though I had on
my long skirt, I just waded right
on in! A skirt tail will dry fast in
hot weather and “time and tide
wait for no man”, if you are
going to have fun you better have
it now.
Tonight was dinner at Lady
and Sons, Paula Dean’s restau
rant. Lots of butter does make for
some good tasting food. We had
early seating but it was a sight to
see the long lines forming out
side in the almost 100 degree
weather to get in there to eat. Of
course, I reckon she is one of the
most popular cooks we have
now.
After dinner we went to the
Savannah Theatre for a great live
show called Southern Nights.
This is a musical variety show
and the singing, dancing and
humor was just great. If you have
a chance, go see this show.
Next morning it was back to do
some sightseeing on our own.
The City Market has many dif
ferent types of shops for you to
visit. We took a torn of the First
African Baptist Church which
was one of the most interesting
things of the whole trip. We
heard the story of how this
church was built by the slaves
themselves; after a hard day of
work they came in and built the
church at night. We saw the holes
drilled in the floor so the air
could circulate in the hidden pas
sage that was used to hide the
slaves, it was part of the Under
ground Railroad. Heard the story
of the way the quilts were made
and hung for signs to the slaves
that were trying to escape. It is
well worth your time to take this
short tour if you like history.
We ate lunch there in the City
Market and we ate on the porch
of the restaurant because there
was a nice breeze stirring and it
is so pretty looking out on those
huge old trees with the Spanish
moss hanging from the limbs. It
had been another good trip and
maybe next time you will go
along with us!
