PHS Cross Country
Boys take 3rd overall, girls place 8th
at Ridgeferry Invitational
PHS’ Luis Lozoya (left) is pictured in a sprint to the finish
with Miguel Alcantar of Dalton at last week’s Ridgeferry In
vitational. Lozoya beat Alcantar to the finish line to place
11th overall in 18:12.15 and help the Dragons to a 3rd place
team finish out of 25 teams. Teammate Justin Weaver ran
16:07.90 for 1st place overall, setting new meet and PHS
school records for the 5K distance in the process.
The PHS boys’, girls’ and JV
Cross Country teams were all in
action on Thursday, Sept. 23 at
the Ridgeferry Invitational (5K/
3.1 miles) sponsored by Rome
High School. The meet was held
at Ridgeferry Park, one of the
faster venues the teams will race
this year. Race conditions were
almost perfect except for the
temperature which was unsea
sonably warm in the mid-90’s.
The Varsity Boys raced first in
a field including a total of 25
teams, 166 runners and including
region foes Dalton, Heritage -
Catoosa, Lafayette and Murray.
To nobody’s surprise, PHS’
Justin Weaver took the lead at the
150 meter mark paced closely by
Trevor Grant of Lambert.
Weaver and Grant led the field
through just over 2 miles, and
then Weaver threw in a series of
surges that Grant could not
match. Weaver finished in a new
meet and PHS school record time
of 16:07.90. Grant was second in
16:26.22, while PHS’ Drew Bel
lows ran a personal best of
17:29.95 to finish 3rd overall.
PHS’ Luis Lozoya also ran a
strong race to finish 11th overall
in 18:12.15. Weaver, Bellows
and Lozoya all received medals
which went to the top 15 finish
ers in each race. Finishing in 4th
position for PHS was Jason
Walker (19:13.33/49th), fol
lowed by Adam Austin
(19:25.96/64th) in the number 5
spot.
The team score in cross coun
try is determined by adding the
places of the first 5 runners, with
lower scores correlating with
high places in the meet. The
Dragons finished a very strong
3rd overall out of 25 schools
competing (128 points) to re
ceive a trophy. Dalton took first
place in team scoring with 91
points, while Heritage - Catoosa
was second with 96 points.
The ’Nettes raced next with
19 teams and 142 runners toeing
the line in the varsity girls’ race.
Ashley Logan finished in first
position for the ’Nettes, running
a personal best 21:49.58 for 15th
place and a medal. Following
Logan for the ’Nettes were Erin
Dean (23:15.49/34th), Sarah Bal
lard (23:17.86/36th), Morgan
Bailey (25:59.93/87th), and Mol-
lie Shaw (27:08.34/ 105th). The
’Nettes finished a very re
spectable 8th out of 19 teams.
Finishing first overall in new
meet record time of 18:28.31)
was Allie Schaich of Lambert.
Finishing first overall in the team
scoring was Rome (67 points)
followed by Heritage - Catoosa
(78 points) and Dalton (78
points). Heritage and Dalton had
the same number of total points,
but Heritage bested Dalton by
tie-breaker - having the higher
placing 6th runner.
The JV races were last on the
day, and Wyatt Ingram (8th
grade) of PCMS is already start
ing to turn heads in the local run
ning community even before he
officially joins the high school
ranks. Ingram led the J.V. Boys’
race essentially from start to fin
ish, besting the 2nd place finisher
by probably 30 to 40 seconds to
finish in a very quick 18:13.
Complete JV times were not
available at press time.
According to current rankings
by gatfxc.com, the Dragons are
ranked in a 3rd place tie in 3A-
Region 7 with Heritage-Catoosa,
not far behind Dalton. Allatoona
appears to be the team to beat,
with their top 5 separated by only
35 seconds. Individually for the
Dragons, Justin Weaver is ranked
1st first in the region, while
Drew Bellows is 2nd, and Luis
Lozoya 4th. The ’Nettes are
ranked 4th overall just ahead of
Cartersville. Ranked first in 3A-
Region 7 for the girls is Heritage,
followed by Dalton and Alla
toona. Individually, Ashley
Logan is ranked 10th in the re
gion, while Erin Dean is 20th and
Sarah Ballard is 22nd.
This week, both Dragons and
’Nettes will be off with regards
to competition. The next sched
uled meet is the Cass-
Cartersville Invitational which
will be held at Dellinger Park in
Cartersville on Oct. 5.

Jackets stung at home
By Don Bryant
After de
feating North
Carolina the
previous
week in an
ACC match
up, the Geor
gia Tech Yel
low Jackets
looked to
pick up their
second con
ference win
last Saturday as they hosted
North Carolina State. However,
it was all Wolfpack as they took
care of the Jackets 45-28 in their
first meeting since 2006.
QB Russell Wilson passed for
a career high 368 yards and three
touchdowns as he completed 28
of 41 passes and one rushing
touchdown as he led the Wolf-
pack to its best start at 4-0 (1-0)
since winning its first nine
games in 2002.
N.C. State gained 527 yards
and scored its most points in the
series against Tech. The loss
snapped the Yellow Jackets’
streak of eight straight confer
ence wins including last year’s
defeat of Clemson in the ACC
Championship game.
After the Jackets scored two
quick touchdowns in the fourth
quarter, including a 33-yard in
terception return by Jerrard Tar
rant, the Wolfpack offense
responded with two touchdown
drives to seal the deal.
In their six previous games,
the Tech rush defense had al
lowed a back to ran for 100 plus
yards, and their rushing defense
ranks only seventh in the ACC
with its average of 154 yards per
game allowed. Out of the 527
yards allowed in this game, over
150 were rushing.
The Yellow Jackets were held
to 247 yards rushing, almost 100
yards below their average.
Joshua Nesbitt had 19 carries for
95 rushing yards for Tech and
threw a 32-yard touchdown pass
to Tyler Melton in the final quar
ter.
Orwin Smith and Roddy
Jones each had a touchdown ran
for Tech. Tech falls to 2-2 overall
and 1-1 in ACC play.
Tech travels to Wake Forest
on Oct. 2.

Good start for Falcons
By Don Bryant
After struggling to score
points in pre-season play and
managing only three field goals
in their 15-9 loss in overtime at
Pittsburgh, the Atlanta Falcons
have seen their offense come
alive with back-to-back solid
performances as they improve to
2-1 on the season.
With a lackluster perform
ance against the Steelers, the
Falcons had little trouble in their
second game as they routed the
Arizona Cardinals 41-7. Third
year QB Matt Ryan passed for
225 yards and three touchdowns.
The Falcons won easily over the
Cardinals despite relying on
some backups.
The Falcons lost their top two
running backs, Michael Turner
and Jerious Norwood, in the first
half against Arizona. Starting re
ceiver Michael Jenkins missed
the first two games with a shoul
der injury. Norwood was placed
on season-ending injured reserve
with a knee injury.
Jason Snelling stepped in
against Arizona with 129 yards
rushing, 57 yards receiving and
three touchdowns. He was
named NFC Offensive Player of
the week.
After losing two games to the
New Orleans Saints last year, the
Falcons got revenge last Sunday
as they traveled to New Orleans
and stunned the defending Super
Bowl champs with an exciting
27-24 win in overtime. The Fal
cons would have won in regula
tion if not for Garrett Hartley’s
32-yard field goal that tied the
game with four seconds remain
ing.
Hartley, the Saints field goal
kicker, set a Super Bowl record
last year with three field goals
longer than 40 yards.
After the game-tying kick to
end regulation. Hartley missed a
29-yard field goal in OT that
would have sealed the deal for
the Saints. Instead, the Falcons
got new life and on their second
possession in OT had one more
chance as Matt Bryant drilled a
46-yard field goal with 1:55 to
play. The Falcons won 27-24.
This game resembled more of
a play-off game than a regular
season game and was a good win
for the Falcons.
Matt Ryan passed for 228
yards and touchdowns of 13
yards to Tony Gonzalez and 22
yards to Roddy White. Michael
Turner added 30 carries for 114
yards and a touchdown. Gonza
lez had eight catches for 110
yards and White had five catches
for 69 yards.
