The Duke University Talent
Identification Program (TIP) is a
respected national program that
identifies academically gifted
students and provides them with
innovative programming to sup
port their development. Offering
a 7th grade talent search, gifted
students and their families find
out how advanced the students'
abilities truly are. According to
www.tip.duke.edu, traditional
testing occasionally fails to
measure the variation among
many gifted students who reach
the upper limits of scoring on
grade-level exams. By taking ad
vanced above-level (at least two
years above a student’s current
grade placement) testing through
TIP’s talent searches, gifted stu
dents and their families gain bet
ter understanding of where the
student stands in relation to
Candidates are then invited to
take the ACT or the SAT as 7th
graders, allowing greater insight
into their academic abilities. In
addition, they gain valuable ben
efits and resources for gifted stu
dents. Participating students,
upon entering high school, will
be eligible for summer and
weekend programs as well as
consideration for scholarships.
Taking the SAT or ACT in 7th
grade gives these students an ad
vance opportunity to practice and
become familiar with the exams
that play a major role in college
admissions. Students’ early expe
rience with college entrance
exams are helpful in preparing
them to take the exams later in
high school. All talent search
participants receive resources
and publications to assist the stu
dent’s educational growth.
