By Jeff Warren
Burnt Mountain Center par
ticipants, staffers, and friends
gathered Friday afternoon, Octo
ber 1, to dedicate a new memo
rial garden at the Center’s south
face.
Work to accomplish the gar
den required a fair portion of the
summer. Center participants and
staff installed a foimtain and built
a patio of paving stones and mor
tar. Some fencing, a trellis gate,
benches, picnic tables, and gar
den landscaping completed the
project, a memorial to former
Center participants who have
died.
The garden’s shady sitting
area is quiet and out of the way.
Fountain splash over stones adds
to the peaceful setting.
A brass plaque marks the spot
as “Ellen’s Garden-In memory
of Ellen Ridehalgh for her love
and dedication to Burnt Moun
tain Center. September 2010.”
“Ellen was constantly work
ing to make Burnt Mountain
Center better for participants,”
explained Center Director Deb
bie Rooker in comments at the
dedication.
The Burnt Mountain Center
finds meaningful work for the
developmentally disabled.
Through the Center, participants
contribute significantly to the
larger community while also en
joying the close-knit community
the Center provides.
Ellen Ridehalgh’s idea to pub
lish and sell a Center cookbook
to raise funds for some picnic ta
bles ultimately generated enough
money to fund the new garden.
“Every bit of this was bought
with the proceeds from that,”
Rooker said, “and it was done by
the love of all the participants.”
When Ridehalgh developed
cancer before completing her
cookbook, Center staffer, Hope
Spivey, continued the project,
seeing it to completion and suc
cess. Ellen’s idea worked with
help from Center friends who
furnished recipes. Sadly, Ellen
did not see the book completed
before she lost her battle with
cancer.
Her memory lives on as a
kind friend to Burnt Mountain
Center and as baker of the best
brownies in the western hemi
sphere (a recipe immortalized in
the Center cookbook).
The day of the garden dedica
tion, Ellen’s son, Desmond Ride
halgh, held up a copy of a new
Center cookbook—this one cen
tered round American holidays.
Sales of the new book are ear
marked toward construction of
an arbor that will over-span the
garden just dedicated.
That touch will add even
more beauty to the place, as
Ellen Ridehalgh did with the
things she touched.
